Preparation of a Solution from a Solid
1.

Purpose:

What mass is required to produce 100 mL of 0.500 mol/L CuSO4 5H2O(aq).

Prepare 100 mL of 0.500 mol/L of CuSO4 5H2O(aq).

Materials:
1 100 mL volumetric flask
1 funnel
1 balance
1 scoopula
1 Erlenmeyer Flask
solute = copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate

1 - 250 mL beaker
1 - stirring rod
1 - wash bottle
1- weighing boat
1- 25mL pipette & bulb

Procedure:

Stock Solution
1. Calculate the mass of solute required. (like you did in the first question)
2. Use a balance to obtain the mass required. Remember to zero the weighing boat!
3. Dissolve the required mass of solute in a beaker using less than half of the final volume of water
(less than 100 mL).
4. Transfer solution to a volumetric flask. (rinse beaker and funnel several times
with distilled water)
5. Bring the solution up to final volume. (add drop by drop until the bottom of the
meniscus is on the line)
6. Mix thoroughly by inverting (not shaking) the volumetric flask several times.
7. Leave the volumetric flask stoppered. Show your teacher (Teacher signature) ____________

Diluted solution
8. Decant (pour) your stock solution into your Erlenmeyer flask. Do not rinse this step!
9. Pipette 50mL of stock solution into your volumetric flask. Take turns pipetting!
10. Fill your volumetric flask up to the line (100mL line) with distilled water.
11. Leave the volumetric flask stoppered. Show your teacher (Teacher signature) _____________
12. Calculate the new concentration of your solution. (using C1V1 = C2V2)

Analysis/Discussion:
13. Why would it be necessary to rinse the equipment in step 4 of the procedure?

14. Why do I need to use distilled water instead of tap water in order to make my solutions?

15. Why was the final stock solution inverted?

16. Why should the final solution be left stoppered?

17. Why is it necessary to use a volumetric flask over a beaker or Erlenmeyer flask when making
standard solutions?

18. How much CuSO4.5H2O(s) is needed to prepare 250 mL of a 0.150 mol/L solution?

19. From that solution, what volume would I need to bring the solution to in order to dilute it to
0.0150 mol/L ?

20. As chemists, why do we bother making standardized solutions?
