Geometry Honors
Ms. Tyisha Lewis Room 2-231
Email: Lewisty@pcsb.org
Mission Statement: It is my mission to provide a safe learning environment for all
students. Also, each student is worth whatever it takes to help him or her become
successful learners in Mathematics.
Course Description: Students will study Mathematics using hands-on methods,
cooperative groups and technology which will relate to real world applications.
Concepts will be aligned to the Florida State Standards for Geometry.
Books/Resources: Carnegie-Geometry/www.carnegielearning.com.
Objectives: Students will learn and understand:

How to think critically and creatively.

Apply Mathematical concepts to real world applications.
How to work and participate in groups.
How to use effective questioning, speaking and listening skills.
How to develop and use hands-on projects related to Mathematics.
How to study and take assessments.
How to use technology.
FSA strategies and skills.

Geometry Content Objectives:

The fundamental purpose of the course in Geometry is to formalize and extend
students Geometric experiences from the middle grades. Students explore more
complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric
relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. Important
differences exist between this Geometry course and the historical approach taken in
Geometry class. For example, transformations are emphasized early in this course.
Close attention should be paid to the introductory content conceptual category
found in the high school Florida State Standards. The Standards for Mathematical
Practice apply throughout each course and together with the content standards,
prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical
subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. The
critical areas, organized into seven units are as follows:
Unit 1- Vocabulary, Lines and Transformations
Unit 2- Volume
Unit 3- Triangle theorems, congruence and similarity
Unit 4- Trigonometry
Semester 1 Review and Exam
Unit 5- Polygons
Unit 6-Circles
Unit 7-Introduction to Conics

This year the students will be assessed during the month of April with the Florida
State Assessment (FSA)
Teacher Responsibilities:

Come to class prepared to teach.

Treat each student fairly and respectfully.
Be available to provide extra help.
Provide a positive environment.
Call parents when appropriate.

Supplies:

Pencils
3 one subject spiral notebooks
Notebook filler paper
1.5 inch three-ring binder

Homework: Students are responsible for daily homework both in the skills practice
workbook and online on carnegielearning.com. Current research shows that
homework helps retention skills in Mathematics. Classwork will be completed in
class. Any work not finished will also be completed for homework. This is part of the
learning process.
Grading: The grading scale is as follows: A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=60-69.
And F= 59-below. Any work not turned in will get an NTI (not turned in). Students
are to re-do assignments and assessments until a grade of B or Higher is earned.
Categories will be based on a weighted percentage and they are as follows:
Tests/Projects-50% of grade, Carnegie on-line tutor-30%,
Homework/Classwork/Interactive Notebooks/Quizzes/mini lessons-20%
Teacher and Parent communication: In order to provide an adequate learning
environment for all students in my classroom it is in your childs best interest that
we work together. I will be in close contact with you regarding your childs progress.
Please check Portal for your childs progress. Written communication will be
provided half way through each grading period. If you have any questions please
call me at Gibbs High School to set up a conference.
