Unit of Inquiry Project: Create You Own Island, Government and Society

As a way to show what you have learned in the Unit, How

We Organize Ourselves, you will be creating your own
island! Your island will have a government structure in place
and a functioning society. Remember our central ideas...
Governments and societies shape and influence one another!
Requirements for you island:
a) A model of your island this may include a color
drawing, a clay or wooden structure, Lego structure...
b) A brochure of your island ask yourself what your island has to offer a
tourist/new resident and write about it. Think of the geography, the people
that live there, the climate, the natural resources and cultural traditions.
Structure: Make a draft of the six panels. There are three panels on each
side of the paper. It can be folded many ways, but the six panels need to be
planned out on a piece of notebook paper.
Front Panel: This should have the title, your name, and basic
information about the island. (A picture, clip art or small piece of artwork
about the topic is a nice addition).
Other Five Panels: Display information with subtitles, pictures, clip art, and
designs.
c) A flag design a flag for your island, make it colorful...
d) A constitution this should declare the Supreme Law of the Land. In it you
should think about what your society values? How does your constitution
insure that your society/island functions in the way you see as important?
After you are satisfied with your draft of your islands constitution, rewrite
it on tea-stained paper to make it look old and official J
e) An essay this is where you will tie everything together: explaining your
islands government structure, any historical events that shaped your
government, how the government affects the society, and why you chose this
structure (thesis statement). Does it create a flourishing society that is
peaceful? How does your island interact with the rest of the world?
