STANDARD:
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
3.2.3.A3 Demonstrate how heating and cooling may cause changes in the properties of
materials including phase changes.
Students will be able to understand how ice forms and be able to make their own ice
and popsicles.

A. Prerequisite skills

B. Key Vocabulary
1. Ice: frozen water, a brittle, transparent crystalline solid.
2. Icicle: a hanging, tapering piece of ice formed by the freezing
of dripping water.

C. Big Idea
How ice is made and where do we see it in everyday life.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. The teacher will ask students how they think ice is made.
2. A class discussion will begin about what the students thoughts
are and notes of what they say will be written on the board.
B. Development
1. The teacher will explain how ice is actually made.
2. The teacher will go back with the students and see if the
predictions they wrote on the board were correct or not.
3. Teacher will ask students what kind of ice they see in their
everyday lives and where it is found.
4. Teacher will explain the activity for the day is that students will
make popsicles today that will be ready for them to have as a
snack tomorrow.
5. Students will pick a juice flavor they want to freeze and turn
into a popsicle.
6. Students will pour the juice in the mold and put a popsicle stick
in it.
7. Students will then put their juice in the freezer and get it the
next day when it turns into a popsicle.
C. Closure
1. Students will watch the video of how ice is made for ice
sculptures.
2. Students will take quiz and hand it in as a form of assessment.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. To accommodate Billy, a student with a learning disability, he
will be seated at the front of the room and the quiz at the end of
class.

1. Formative: Quiz at the end of the lesson
2. Summative: test at the end of the unit.
