Mr. Martin/Mr.

Pattersons Class
Week of November 16-20
On Monday we will be working with Mr. Knapp from Koviashuvik Local Living School. He will
be teaching us about growing, storing, and using local foods.
On Tuesday the entire second grade will be making Stone Soup with Mr. Knapp. Please
remember to send in a cut up root vegetable to add to the soup as well as a cup or bowl for
your child to use.
On Thursday night the PTA is hosting a harvest dinner at 5:30. Spaghetti will be provided.
You just need to bring a side dish to share. Please attend if you are interested.
Our Second Step lesson this week will be about the importance of feeling confident.
There will be no newsletter next week because it is such a short week. There is only school
on 11/23 and 11/24. Have a Happy and safe Thanksgiving!
Math: We are working on our third module of the year, Place Value, Counting, and Comparison
of Numbers to 1,000. Our focus this week will be on the different forms that numbers can take.
We will review using quickdraw, writing numbers in word form (two hundred thirty-one), and
writing numbers in unit form (2 hundreds 3 tens 1 one). Students will learn what writing
numbers in standard form (231) and expanded form (200 + 30 + 1 = 231) mean this week.
Spelling: Identifying short and long vowel sounds. Consonant clusters with s. Identifying
syllables with double consonants.
Reading: This will be the last week of Book Club for this session.
Read 20 minutes a night. Reread your favorite books to improve how you sound.

Writing: This week you will have to write your opinion about which homework book you liked the
best. Make sure you use capital letters, and proper punctuation.
Science: We are now working on a unit about inventions and inventors. We will finish learning
about Ben Franklin this week. We will then start learning about the life and inventions of
Thomas Edison.
Social Studies: None for now as we focus on Science.
Vocabulary: Impulsivity- Inclined to act on impulse rather than thought. People who are overly
impulsive, seem unable to curb their immediate reactions or think before they act. As a result,
they may blurt out answers to questions or inappropriate comments, or run into the street
without looking. Their impulsivity may make it hard for a child to wait for things they want or to
take their turn in games. They may grab a toy from another child or hit when they are upset.
