Personal Statement
Building positive relationships with students, staff and members of the co
helps to create a solid foundation to build upon. I have found through exp
in my practicums that my classrooms ran smoother and behaviour was m
because I had taken the time to know my students and let them know tha
respected them and they therefore showed me the same courtesy. Havin
undertaken two practicums in country area schools, I have found through
experience that it is valuable to also build positive relationships within the
community. I made it a priority to introduce myself to the parents through
schools newsletter and by also being involved in parent-teacher interview
on my final practicum I was lucky to be involved in producing a whole sch
musical. It could not have been done successfully if it was not for the invo
of members from the community volunteering their time. This is also valu
allows the students to have a healthy relationship with mentors within the
community and for them to also connect their learning into their everyday
Every student is unique, meaning that they all have different interests, sk
learning profiles and it us a fundamental part of being a teacher is discov
these to help to build a picture of who our students are. When this is done
effectively, high-quality teachers will naturally tailor curriculum to suit their
learners. I found it necessary to differentiate my curriculum on my final pr
as the diversity in the classroom, especially in a combined 8/9 class I tau
highly evident. I used various tools to differentiate including Blooms Taxo
choice boards, and support and scaffolding. Using these tools helped eve
student to each reach the learning requirements and to succeed in doing
sought to use technology in multi-modal ways to enhance my teaching.
Having the knowledge and also the passion for your learning areas is a c
requirement of being a teacher as your passion is infectious and transfers
the students. In my two practicums I have had the opportunity to teach En
from years 6-12 and have covered topics such as professional English (e
grammar, spelling, formatting and punctuation), text analysis (The Sapph
Edward Scissorhands, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and various oth
media) and text production (advertising, essays, etc.). In Drama I have be
involved in establishing drama into my practicum schools that previously
have an available drama program. I have had experience in introducing b
drama skills and directing a whole school musical working with years R-1
In drama it is vital that you are always aware of safe classroom practices
what safety equipment you need to meet OHS&W requirements. I have a
the OHS&W policy outlined on the DECD website (2015).
