Men vs. Women

Males were expected to join

the military /get a job in

order to help bring in money
for their current or future
family
Expectations changed for the
teenager in the 1950s
The economy was booming
and families (as well as
teenagers) experienced a
great deal of economic
power, freedom and
independence

Females were taught

-how to take care of the
household
-prepare to be a dutiful wife
-take care of children.

Marriage and a family of their

own, more than
education or a career,
was seen as a definite in
their lives
had very little economic
freedom, independence, and
input into decision making
prior to WWII
