EMPLOYMENT
Director, Operations and User Services
Wayne State University Libraries
The Director of Library Operations and User Services provides senior level leadership for a wide
range of operational divisions, including Learning and Research Support, Discovery Services, Digital
Publishing, Acquisitions/Collection Development, Library Technology, and Access Services. This
role oversees twenty-four direct reports, and works with all library service groups to advance the
library system strategic directions and to promote the libraries role as a valued campus partner
with teaching, learning, and research.
Reporting directly to the Dean, this role leads the advancement of library strategic directions;
engages with the larger library system to express the library visions and mission, promotes
professional development and organizational growth, develops technology strategy, and develops
innovative approaches to library services based on data-driven and collaborative approaches.
A key function of this role is the development of a model organizational culture focused on agile
teams with a greatly flattened administrative structure. Working with a wide range of areas of
stakeholders, the Director of Library Operations works to promote organizational agility and
efficient service processes, and to develop a culture of positive evolution that develops leadership
at all levels of the organization.
Worked with library leadership and WSU Employee Development to develop a strategic
planning process aligned with the ongoing University strategic plan. The new process
entails yearly unit tactical plans aligned with University and Library strategic directions,
and a values integrations committee working to promote library core values in the daily
operations.
Worked with a range of library leaders to develop new organizational structure built
around self-organizing teams with a focus on collaboration, self-empowerment, and
operational excellence.
Served in a key role to convert the Science and Engineering Library into a closed collection
to improve access to materials and develop operational efficiencies. The project entailed a
comprehensive data review to both evaluate physical use, the development of
communications, and process changes to ensure uninterrupted access to library materials.
Worked with professional staff and the library leadership to continually evolve hiring
practices that represent new models of library staffing including a focus on new
technology roles and the functional-specialist model as described by the Association of
College and Research Libraries.
Supported key initiatives with library technology, including a new focus on discovery and
innovation, digital publishing, and staff intranet.
Served in a key capacity with yearly budgetary concerns, including developing cost
reduction measures and auditing resulting in operational cost reductions over $300,000.
Responsibilities include managing library discovery interfaces, including the integrated library
system, link resolvers, discovery platform, and the library website. Managed a staff of twelve,
including systems, ILS, cataloging/metadata and database integrity teams.
Implemented the Ebsco Discovery Service, and later the Summon Discovery Layer; managed
project deployment including evaluation, technology development, and marketing.
Managed a large technology infrastructure, including over a dozen public facing services
and over thirty servers.
Responsible for library technology development and software programming initiatives, including
open source software development and improving library systems with emerging technology.
Was a key developer for the library mobile website using the open-source MIT Mobile Web
OSP system. The platform provided over 100,000 users access to library information and
resources via mobile devices.
Created a new method to integrate library resources into the university learning
management (BlackBoard) system. Library subject guides are automatically included in
over 5,000 classes, and traffic to the library subject guides has grown by 17% with yearly
visits nearing 350,000 users.
Developed a library stack mapping application to help patrons locate materials in any of the
five WSULS libraries. The system helps over 3,000 yearly users map library materials in
300 different locations.
Funded graduate assistant as part of Institute of Museum and Library Services Recruiting
and Educating the 21st Century Fine and Performing Arts Librarian grant cohort.
Developed a volunteer program for the Michigan Opera Theatre library to digitize archives,
which still serves as a key practicum destination for WSU library school students.
Systems administrator for the LUNA visual resource management system. Duties include
managing hardware, testing, and data migration. System was deployed as a campus-wide
resource in the spring of 2009 and is the primary classroom tool in support of the campus
