ANCIENT ASTRONOMY

First Nations People Believed that the night sky was a pattern of the Pacific
Northwest

Believed that the night sky was a pattern on a great blanket overhead, which
was held up by a spinning world pole resting on the chest of a woman named
Stone Ribs

Inuit in the High Arctic

Used a mitt to determine when seal pups woukd be born, by holding the mitt at
arms length at the horizon

ANCIENT ASTRONOMY
The Myans of Central America
Build an enormous cylinder shaped tower, at Chichen Itza to celebrate the
equinoxes

The Ancient Egyptians

Built many pyramids and other monuments to align with the
Seasonal position of certain stars

Aboriginal Peoples of Southwestren Alberta

Used key rocks, which aligned with certain stars, in their medicine circles

ANCIENT ASTRONOMY- SOLSTICE

Many cultures also honoured the sun. There are 4 annual events that were
celebrated.

The winter solstice (Dec 21)

The summer solstice (June 21)
The autumnal Equinox (September 22)
The Vernal Equinox (Mar 21)

The solstices were the shortest and the longest periods of daylight

The equinoxes were the periods in which daylight and darkness are equal

HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY
Since the earliest times, stars and planets have fascinated people. Ancient
peoples in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas tried to understand the
heavens, attaching stories to them. In the last hundred years, we have made
rapid progress in our understanding and exploration of our universe including
manned and unmanned missions throughout our solar system.
