We have begun reading Elie Wiesels compelling
memoir, Night, in class. Hopefully you have begun to notice that
it is about much more than a young boys struggle to survive one
of the most horrific events in history. Night details a journey of
survival in which ones faith is tested, innocence lost, and family
and friends are systematically killed. By the end of the memoir,
the narrator has hardened his heart and lost his faith.
Night will stay with you long after you have turned the
final page. In this project, you will share your knowledge and
thoughts on this text.
You will create a two to three page newspaper/newsletter containing the following labeled sections:
Newspaper Title: name your newspaper so it fits the assignment
Lead Story: a one to two paragraph summary of the novel with an appropriate picture
Editorial: your thoughts on the Holocaust (one to two paragraphs)
Hate Crimes Today: Read the newspaper or newsmagazines (many of which are online) and look for
articles that somehow relate to the unit we are working on: stereotypes, hate crimes, genocide, prejudice.
Find two articles (which you will submit as attachments). You will write a one to two paragraph summary
of each article detailing the 5 Ws and 1 H. The third paragraph in each will connect the news to the
Holocaust in general, or Night in particular. (Additional assistance is attached.)
Where Are They Now: a one paragraph update on Elie Wiesel with accompanying picture
Faces in the Crowd: two paragraphs highlighting two minor characters from the memoir. Explain who
they are, what happened to them and why they are significant to the story (one paragraph per character).
Never Forget: you will create an illustration OR your own version of the Never passage from the text
(see attachment).
