ASSIGNMENT # 4
Use the method of virtual work to compute the following, while ignoring the effects
of shear deformations unless otherwise stated:
1.

(c )v in Fig. 1 where A = 2500 mm2 for ABC and 1500 mm2 for BD; I = 2 106 mm4 for
ABC; and E = 2 105 MPa. [Ans. 147.5 mm (up)]

2.

2 and 2 in Fig. 2. The beam has a rectangular cross-section of 600 mm depth and 200 mm
width, and E = 2.1 105 MPa, G = E/2.6. [Ans. 2 = 10.05 mm (down)] Establish what
percentage of the total deformation is due to shear.

3.

(3 )v in Fig. 3. Ignore the effect of axial deformations and take E = 2.1 105 MPa and I =
369.7 106 mm4 . [Ans. 11.2 mm (down)]

4.

(3 )v , 3 , and 3 in Fig. 4. Disregard the effect of axial deformations and take same E and
I as in #3. [Ans. (3 )v = 4.5 mm (down), 3 = 0.00258 rad]

5.

(2 )h and (4 )h in Fig. 5. Establish what percentage of the total displacement is due to the
axial deformations. Take A = 13200 mm2 , E = 2.1 105 MPa and I = 369.7 106 mm4 . [Ans.
(2 )h = 2.6 mm (right)]

6.

Translation of the free end of the structure in Fig. 6. Take same A, I and E as in #5. [Ans.
Vertical Component = 41.78L3 /EI + 45.71L/AE (down)]

7.

(3 )v , 3 , and 3 in Fig. 4. Ignore the applied loads and consider the temperature differential
at the exterior (Te = 300 C) and interior (Ti = 00 C) fibres. The temperature during construction
was 150 C. Take = 105 /0 C, A = 16300 mm2 , I = 584.8 106 mm4 and h = 475 mm. [Ans.
(3 )v = 10 mm (down), 3 = 0.01011 rad]

8.

3 and 3 in Fig. 4 due to a 10 mm horizontal movement of support 1 to right. [Ans. 3

= 0.00008 rad]

9.

3 in Fig. 7. The members of the frame have the same constant tubular cross-section (outside
diameter 120 mm, thickness 30 mm) and are made of the same material (G = E/2.6, E =
2.1 105 MPa). Disregard the effect of axial deformations. [Ans. 700/3EI + 240/KT G
(down)]
