ADAPTIVE ART
Repetition
Scale
Temporary Art
Texture
Video Art

1) Principle: Scale
Lesson
Wonderland Students will watch a clip from Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory. The class will have a discussion about how scale was used to make things
look powerful, scary, funny, and exciting. Students will then choose an environment they wish
they could be in and insert themselves into it. This could be a digital photomontage, a collage or a
drawing/painting depending on the skill level of the students. Stencils, cutouts, and stamps can be
made available for students who may need them.
Visual Impairments: Providing items that produce sounds and smells can help transport students
into their environment and make it more fun and meaningful.

2) Principle: Video Art

Lesson
Shadow Films In small groups, student artists can work together to create a short film using light
and shadow. They can create a scene using everyday objects found in the classroom and/or they
can build it out of paper, cardboard, etc. Together, they will create a story using the 5 essential
elements: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution.
Things to keep in mind: When working in groups, students can help each other with different
tasks which, in turn, can build trust, empathy, and independence.

3) Principle: Texture
Risk Pod Exploration
Tactile Exploration After a discussion on the difference between simulated and physical texture,
students will have the opportunity to explore different textures through the sense of touch. Have
students tell you what they feel and what they could use it for in a future project. You could also
have them tell you an emotion that they associate with that texture. Having students describe
what they feel without looking at what they are touching can help build vocabulary.

4) Principle: Temporary Art

Risk Pod Exploration
Sand Art Students will watch a short video on sand art. Using lightboxes, students can play and
create images in the sand. When they feel comfortable with sharing an image they made,
students can take turns on an overhead projector to show classmates how they made their
images.

5) Principle: Repetition
Risk Pod Exploration
Profile Meanings Student artists will have a template of their profile. They will trace it on 4
different types of paper and cut it out. Within the negative space, students will change the
meaning of the work by adding different images to each one using drawings, book pages,
magazines etc. to show whats going on inside their head and what that like to think about.

LESSON CRITIQUE
Little Slice of Heaven
The most compelling thing(s)...
Im intrigued by the idea of creating a 3 dimensional slice of their perfect moment. I feel that this
could turn our really cool. I like the idea that they arent just painting their idea, but building in a
form that is unexpected and symbolic.
One thing I might change...
Im not sure I like the idea of painting on cardboard and making that into the shape of a piece of
pie, I would really like to see the work in resin or creating layers using laminations sheets. I think
that could bring it to a whole new level and the students would learn a new skill. These could be
gorgeous.
