For my urbanization problem I want to look specifically at New Delhi, India. India is
one of the worlds most populated countries and so they face a major problem of
waste solid waste generation. I would expect the main cities of India to have more
waste generated than its more rural areas. Also, I will be using National
Geographics Mapmaker Interactive for this assignment.

India has always been known for its high population. The only country that is
considered to be close to Indias numbers are China. This is evident in National
Geographics map. On a regional scale, we can see that the east side of China and
India are the same color-shaded (Legend indicates: More than 500,000).

On a local scale, you can see that high population in India until it researches the
borders of Nepal and Pakistan. New Delhi is completely submerged by high
population density.

Problems:
The problem I want to address is solid waste generation. One of the worlds major
problems is waste management. Waste disposal and recycling has caused a
problem not only for us but wild life as well. Overpopulation has caused a difficulty
in the collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of waste, as well as the
monitoring and regulating of these trash. I believe that a high population would
determine higher solid waste generated. The article, "India: Waste Management in
India, has revealed that India has passed several laws regarding trash disposal.
Companies have strict trash regulations that they need to follow which in turn will
lead to better environmental development (Tripathy 3). According to the Earth
Engineering Center by the University Of Columbia University, Urban India
generates 188,500 tonnes per day (68.8 million tonnes per year) of municipal solid
waste (MSW) at a per capita waste generation rate of 500 grams/person (Ranjith
2).

Solution:
The solutions for proper trash disposal is simple yet quite challenging at the same
time. Because the process of trash recycling is slow, the facilities cant quite handle

the amount of trash generated by billions of people. There are other methods of
proper waste disposal, such as to re-use products, biological reprocess, and energy
recovery. These methods will make India (and the world) become more environment
sustainable, which in turn will prevent diseases and other harmful health agents
that will cost our lives. The government should pour funding into better waste
management facilities, such as eco-incinerators and to use the trash and Indias
landfills to create energy.
