When I was still in college, I had already observed a court hearing. Prior to the
schedule, I was so excited and I had so many expectations such as big and modernized
facility and intense argumentation among the counsels and others that I observed in the
movies. I was expecting that what was shown in the movie is exactly the same with what
happens in reality. However, I was kind of upset after my observation maybe because
first, since that was a family court and the case involved child abuse and child
trafficking, I was expecting that the child will be interviewed or examined in a chamber
away from the attending public to preserve confidentiality; second, I observed that most
of the parties involved are not that highly educated and could hardly understand basic
English language, yet, during the examination, all questions were asked by the counsels
in English. The judge asked and spoke in the same language as well, good thing there
were interpreters. My point is, using the English language in examining parties who are
not fluent in the same can be potentially intimidating on the part of the persons being
examined and may produce pressure which could affect his delivery of statements.
Third, the courtroom is so small, crowded and substandard. Those were my initial
observation during my court visits two years ago.
