Lesson Plan Template for College of Education

Lesson Title: Tribe Lives


Subject: Social Studies
State Standard: 3-2.1: Compare the culture, governance, and physical environment of the major Native
American tribal groups of South Carolina, including the Cherokee, Catawba, and Yemassee.
Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to compare the homes, food, and government of the three
Native American tribes in South Carolina by completing a graphic organizer and role-playing these
characteristics.
Essential Questions or problem(s): What are the three main Native American tribes of South Carolina
and what are their characteristics?
Activities/Procedures:
Write expectations (and map and chant) on board and welcome students.
o You do not talk when the teacher is speaking (or during presentations).
o Hands and feet to yourself.
o Be responsible with the materials.
o This activity is a privilege, not a right.
As students come in the door, hand them colored feather and have them sit at the basket with
matching feather and put their feather in the basket.
Relate expectations to students.
Activate prior knowledge, by connecting Native American communities to South Carolina
regions using chant.
In the Blue Ridge region live the Cherokee,
In Piedmont the Catawba; Coastal Zone, the Yemassee
These are our states three main tribes,
They have special ways of living their lives.

Briefly explain activity and send students to stations.


At stations teachers hand out graphic organizer and begin explaining characteristics of the tribes.
Teachers will have 5 minutes at each station.
Students will rotate back to the original tribe where teachers will collect graphic organizers and
break students into groups. They will explain the performance expectations. They will hand
students task cards and help them prepare to role-play their task (an action and one sentence).
Groups will have 5 minutes to prepare.
Bring students back to whole group. Explain performance expectations.

Accommodations:
Auditory: Instruction will be given verbally and conversations will take place to enhance auditory
learning.

Visual: Maps, pictures, visuals, and lyrics will be provided to support these learners.
Kinesthetic: Students will be able to learn to a beat, interact with examples, and perform actions.
Resource: Students will be in pairs to help support learning.
ESL: Instructions will be given clearly and visually. Also, pictures and visuals will be provided.
Gifted: Students will extend their thinking at stations through discovery and making connections.
How will other areas of the curriculum be integrated?: Arts are integrated through drama and music.
Closure:
When groups are finished the class will review the essential question and do chant one more time
to review content.

Questioning:
Remembering: Name the three main Native American tribes of South Carolina.
Analyzing: Compare the characteristics of the three Native American tribes.
Creating: Create a sentence and a movement that describes your Native American characteristic.
Assessment:
Students will be formatively assessed by completion of the graphic organizer during station
rotation, and the content of their role-playing.
The teacher will also assess student understanding through conversation.
