Mathematics (Area and Perimeter)
3rd grade
15 minutes/May 5, 2015
Area tells us how much space is inside an object.
Perimeter tells us how much space is around an object.
How do you calculate area?
How do you calculate perimeter?
What is the total area of your dream house?
M03.D-M.4.1.1: Solve real-world and mathematical
problems involving perimeters of polygons, including
finding the perimeter given he side lengths, finding and
unknown side length, exhibiting rectangles with the
same perimeter and different areas, and exhibiting
rectangles with the same area and different
perimeters. Use the same units throughout the
problem.
Individually, third grade students will understand how
to find area by calculating the area of the rooms of their
dream house with 100% accuracy.

Activating Prior Knowledge
Students will complete an entrance slip by calculating
the perimeter of the object on the slip of paper that they
are given.
They should then peer check their answer with their
partner(s).
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
On the ELMO, we will review what perimeter is and go
over 2 students entrance slips in front of the class.
Big Idea Statement

Area
PreAssessment of Students
Students will have perimeter problem on desk to
complete when they arrive for class. We will switch with
partners and peer check each others work.
Modeling of the Concept
Using the ELMO, the teacher will review what perimeter
is.
The teacher will then introduce what area is to the class
using the ELMO.
The teacher will show one problem and how to complete
it by finding the area.
The teacher will introduce the method of finding the
area of irregular shapes by splitting them up into
rectangles.
Guiding the Practice
The teacher will pass out the worksheet to each student
and go through the directions aloud.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will individually create their own dream house
and figure out the area of each room/house as a whole.
