Leadership Reflection

Throughout my time this semester, in the Early Childhood Block, I have

gained lots of knowledge and skills that have helped me become a better
leader vocally and personally. This semester I had the privilege of being apart
of the Pirate Pals committee, which is the Morning Intervention/Data Crew.
Our team is one of the smaller committees, but we have big responsibilities. I
have learned a lot about myself this semester and about working with others
to successfully grow students through data testing and intervention.
In connection to the leadership standards, I helped with the
assessments and distributing them among the other morning intervention
teachers. Throughout the first couple of weeks of morning intervention, we
assessed students enjoyment of reading and used a number of assessments
assigned by Dr. Bluiett for gaging students knowledge in a number of areas.
Towards the end of our time with the students, we analyzed the data we
received from the summative assessments and recorded it on the Pirate Pals
Data board in the Samford workroom. These pieces of analyzed data were
used to show the other Samford teachers what areas the students enjoyed in
reading and how to address that throughout their morning intervention time.
Another important aspect of our leadership committee was to
determine strategies and resources to improve student learning with our
morning intervention triads. With the many weeks of assessing students and
completing class assignments, many of the triads did not get around to
incorporating the information they received into practice with the students. I
believe many of the triads have found many strategies though to improve a
specific reading struggle with their students and can report their findings to

the Title I teachers. Throughout this semester, the Pirate Pal committee has
learned ways of connecting what they have analyzed from the data and using
it to guide instruction. I believe the Samford teachers and the Pirate Pal
committee members have grown a lot throughout this semester and will
make improvements next semester with morning intervention.
In conclusion, my time on the Pirate Pals committee has been greatly
beneficial to my overall growth as an individual. I feel like I have gained
knowledge in data testing, intervention, and helping students grow through
strategies based on data. As a leader, I have grown to become vocal and
speak on behalf of the committee members and myself. I have learned a lot
this semester that I will transfer to next semester and grow from. The
mistakes and efforts we learned as a committee and as individuals will help
us run a successful morning intervention next semester for the Trace
Crossings Elementary School students!
