Section I: Implementation & Evaluation

Introduction
Yoga is a physical practice that unifies the mind, body and spirit. Yoga has spiritual roots
with the main goal of helping individuals to realize true happiness, freedom, or enlightenment
(Haaz, 2009). People often think yoga just focuses on flexibility, but yoga emphasizes on
postural alignment, strength, endurance and balance (Haaz, 2009). Yoga brings positive feelings,
such as alertness and enthusiasm, and reduces negative energy caused by illnesses, anxiety, or
depression (Haaz, 2009). Yoga is also associated with a wide range of physical and psychological
benefits that will be helpful for our clients to choose to participate in our therapeutic yoga
program.
Our Therapeutic Yoga program will take place in an indoor facility so that our therapy
will remain consistent throughout all weather conditions. Our therapeutic yoga program will help
relieve nagging pain and enhance your quality of life through 6 weeks of therapeutic yoga that

consists of 18 sessions. To participate in our program, clients will first have to go to our website,
Therapeuticyogaforbetterlife.com, and print out the forms online containing information
regarding: family background, emergency contact and an agreement form for security purposes.
They will then have to come in the facility with the forms, turn them in, then go through a
physical examination performed by our physical therapist to evaluate the clients body to see
exactly what exercises they need to enhance their quality of life. Afterwards, clients will receive
a form with a meal/diet plan for the 6 weeks that they will be participating in our program, a list
of yoga equipment, along with their schedules and times for yoga therapy. Our program will also
keep in contact with clients following their completion of the program to see their progress and
make sure clients stay pain free as much as possible by emailing them a yoga plan and meal plan
that can last for the next 10 years.

Population
Our target demographic will be arthritis patients from ages 55 years and older. Although
arthritis comes in different strains, common symptoms include pain and swelling in joints that
causes stiffness in limbs and difficulty moving (Nordqvist, 2015). Arthritis is very common in
the United States of America; 1 in every 5 Americans are diagnosed with arthritis, making
50,000,000 diagnosed with arthritis in the United States (Nordqvist, 2015). In order to become
pain free, those diagnosed with arthritis will need therapy to ease their symptoms. Therapeutic
Yoga works to enhance mobility and quality of life. The therapeutic yoga program comes
convenient to enhance the quality of life of patients through gentle and static movement in a
comfortable indoor setting.

The most common characteristics of arthritis is pain and stiffness which can make it
difficult to walk or move (Gardner, 2009). Arthritis can be caused by overworking of joints and
increased body weight that puts pressure on the joints, causing them to wear down. Genetics
plays a large role in joint deterioration as well (Gardner, 2009). Our program will primarily focus
on the pain an individual is feeling and try to stop it at its source.
Program Purpose
The purpose of our program is to enhance mobility and the quality of life for our clients
as stated in our program name. To enhance mobility, our yoga instructors will give a series of
movements that will loosen stiff joints and ligaments that give participants nagging and annoying
pain that causes difficulty in movement. Our program plan includes a lot more benefits that have
not yet been mentioned. These benefits are the benefits that will enhance the quality of an
individuals life:
-

Prevents Cartilage and Joint Breakdown

Protects your spine
Betters your bone Health
Increases your blood flow
Drains your lymphs and boosts immunity
Ups your heart rate
Drops your blood pressure
Regulates your adrenal glands
Gives your lungs room to breathe
Prevents IBS and other digestive Problems
Gives you peace of mind
Increases your self-esteem (McCall, 2007)

- Make you happier

- Lowers blood Sugar
- Helps you focus
- Relaxes your system
- Maintains your nervous system
- Releases tension in your limbs
- Helps you sleep deeper
- Boosts your immune system functionality
- Gives you inner strength
- Connects you with guidance
- Supports your connective tissue

These are great benefits that are needed for our targeted population which is ages 55 years
and higher to enhance their mobility and quality of life because in the ages of 55 years and
higher most of these difficulties physically and mentally start to occur.
Program length, Number and frequency or sessions

Our therapeutic yoga program will last 6 weeks with 18 sessions. There will be 3 sessions
per week, with each session lasting approximately 60 minutes, including the warm up. The
sessions will be divided into three-two week sessions, where the difficulty is increased at each
two-week session. The general rule for arthritis patient is if it hurts, stop (Haaz, 2009). It is
important to be gentle when doing yoga at first and if you do not feel any pain after a couple of
days you can increase the intensity of your exercise (Haaz, 2009). For this reason, our
therapeutic yoga program is designed to gradually increase. The first 2 weeks we will have an
instructor for beginners yoga, which will consist of gentle movements and teaching the basic
breathing techniques for yoga. The second 2 weeks will have an intermediate instructor, which
will teach deeper stretches. The final 2 weeks we will have a yoga expert that will teach deeper
stretches that will loosen stiff joints and ligaments due to arthritis.
Facilities and Equipment
Our facility will be as big as a recreation center with different rooms such as a game
room, weight room, sauna, and 2 bathrooms for each gender, a Jacuzzi, cycling room, Zumba
room and the yoga room. We will also have a concession stand selling healthy food and free
water fountains all around facility. These extra rooms are there for clients that want to hang out
after or come in early and hang out. This will diversify the facility, making leisure an option at
the facility as well. The yoga room will be the biggest room. In the yoga room we will provide
yoga mats, towels, chairs and mini weights. The room will have speakers in all four corners
playing soft relaxing music to ease your mind body and soul. All participants will have to have is
running shoes and flexible clothes to do yoga in.
Staff

In our facility we will have: 3 monitors walking around to make sure everything is on the
right track; 1 physical therapist; 2 volunteers to aid physical therapists with volunteers being a
physical therapy major in college or recreation therapy major; 2 janitors to clean after workouts
and yoga; 1 person at the concession stand selling food; and 1 yoga instructor at a time. This
yoga instructor must be a certified instructor with at least 4 years of experience so that he or she
can understand the needs and accommodations of our clients. Our entire staff except janitors
need to have knowledge of therapeutic yoga and its benefits to be a part of our team.
Program Evaluation
To ensure that we give our clients the best yoga experience, we evaluate them after every
session. If they are feeling pain or uncomfortable, we can make the necessary accommodations
for that individual client. Our staff will complete a post- session Report form (see appendix B) at
the end of each yoga session. In this evaluation the staff will answer a series of nine questions
pertaining to the session. At the end of our 6 week journey our staff will complete the full
Summative Evaluation (See appendix C) to summarize the progress for the entire duration of the
program and a post analysis form (See appendix E). After completing these forms, staff will
receive a full summary of the progress of the yoga program and we will be able to find better
ways to please our clients and make sure we enhance their quality of life through our therapeutic
yoga program.
Client Evaluation
We will be assessing our clients before (Assessment chart found in Appendix D), during,
and after yoga sessions. By doing so, clients see that we care about their well-being and this
feeling makes clients feel comfortable and safe in our facility. This evaluation ensures the client

outcomes were properly targeted and accomplished. This evaluation is very important because it
is all about rating the session and giving feedback so that the staff can adjust to barriers clients
are facing and make accommodations so that clients feel comfortable while still getting the full
effect of the therapeutic yoga program.. The evaluation will ask questions like: Are you
following the movements properly? Do you feel any pain or discomfort during any movement? If
yes which one? Do you feel light headed or dizziness after sessions? What would you like the
instructor to improve on? The Performance Evaluation sheet is on appendix A.
