Book 1:

Training the Best Dog Ever: A Five week Program Using the Power of Positive
Reinforcement By Larry Kay and Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz is about not only training the dog but
also the owner. The Late Coauthor Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz worked with many famous people
and pets and was well known for her movement of positive reinforcement when training dogs.
Dawn, an animal lover liked to show dogs, she began training dogs to pay for her shows and then
this grew into a full time business for her. One day she was called by Vicki Kennedy one day
about a dog they wanted her to evaluate. This particular dog ended up being for the President and
his family.
Being a mother Dawn recommends that you train the dogs as you would treat your
children. Positive training and praise for doing things right is much more successful than
physical force or choke collars. Training is important for both controlling your dogs behavior
but also a good bonding tool between yourself and your dog. By refraining from physical force
your dog will feel safe and a dog that feels safe is safer to be around, this will equal less reports
of dog bites etc. Bonding with your dog is important and the more the dog feels bonded to the
owner the easier the positive reinforcement should be.
Positive reinforcement versus negative reinforcement isnt about bad or good. Instead
positive reinforcement is about giving something valued and negative reinforcement about taking
something of value away or not giving it. One example was given of an owner trying to train his
dog not to jump. Positive reinforcement, attention and treats were given when the dog greeted
him without jumping; negative reinforcement was used when the dog would jump when this was
not wanted and the owner would ignore the dog and not give any attention. By using only
negative punishment or physical force the dog never figures out exactly what is wanted from him
because he cannot think abstractly. Using positive reinforcement to train your dog will make you
a leader in their eyes and they will respect their owner.

Book 2:
Therapy Dogs Today 2nd Edition: Their Gifts, Our Obligation by Kris Butler begins by
expressing the need for the revised edition, not because the first edition was wrong but because
we evolve and change. In the United States how and where therapy dogs are used has increased
and spread rapidly requiring more insight into using therapy dogs. Kris describes some of her
experiences with therapy dogs in the nursing home as magic. TDI, Therapy Dogs International
was the first recognized registry for therapy dogs. The American Kennel Club developed the
Canine Good Citizen test and TDI incorporated it into their dog testing changing it here and there
along the way. After that TDI Inc. was founded and teams were evaluated. Pet partners and other
animal groups were formed, most of which had the same or similar testing requirements. After
the animals are tested they do not need to reapply or re-test. There are a number of volunteer
programs used throughout the United States.

After instances such as the Oklahoma bombing and 9/11 animals were used in a different
capacity. Differences between dogs that go to work for a few hours a week as a companion and
dogs that are working full time require humans to speed up their understanding of the dogs and
what the dogs are communicating. Certain stresses can be placed on therapy dogs and the
humans need to assess what population of people these dogs will be serving and understand that
not every dog is suited for each job. Therapy dogs are placed under more stress than would
appear at first. People are discouraged from touching service dogs and rescue dogs do not need
to sit and be petted by unfamiliar people and in an unfamiliar environment for such extended
period of time.
An Occupational Therapist began to tell Kris about how therapy dogs could be used not
just in nursing homes for companionship but also for therapy related tasks to improve patients
function. In 1995 Kris began to take her sons dog Partner to a rehabilitation hospital and he
became her first therapy dog. To effectively train your animal for these jobs and stresses it is
recommended that you begin first to work as a team in social settings. The owner and dog should
use several public places for training. It could be recommended that volunteer teams get
registered with a national group for liability reason, but there are restrictions to follow with these
groups and owners should do their research.

Book 3:
ABC Practical Guide to Dog Training by Steven Appelbaum is a difficult book to review
from google books because many pages are skipped. First, Steven Appelaum wanted to write this
book because in the past 30 years since he has been a trainer, a lot has changed in the world of
dog training. When people want methods of training a dog they want something that will not
cause the dog harm and that will work. Many people used physical force to correct dog behaviors
in the past and some people took this to the extreme. However there are now people going to the
other extreme and not wanting to use the term owner but rather guardian of the dog to show that
no species is better than the other.
Training starts immediately when you get your dog or puppy home, however
conventional training in a class with other dogs usually requires the dogs to be a certain age.
Some basic rules to follow as a dog trainer are: Be consistent, understand why the behaviors are
taking place and get to the cause, learn basic training techniques. There is some debate on what
type of collars to use for training, choke collars, head collars etc. He believes that both can be
valuable tools if used correctly.
Understanding how dogs learn is essential to training your dog. Positive reinforcement
and negative reinforcement need to be understood and used. Positive reinforcement you are
giving something valued in reward for appropriate behavior. Negative reinforcement you are

removing something of value. Reinforcement means that you want to give new strength to a
behavior but for it to work it must mean something to the dog or they will not understand.

Education. Each chapter in the book is designed for learning containing the reading portion,

traits of an entrepreneur.
The importance of business planning is stressed as there are always risks in business.
Factors and resources to evaluate before planning a business are laid out. These factors include:
Markets, individual interests, capital, skills, and suppliers of inputs, manpower, and technology.
Entrepreneurs should be aware of developments in technology as technology brings about new
innovations which will change the market. To translate business opportunities into profits the
SWOT analysis is used. SWOT is an acronym of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and
Threats and evaluates them in relation to a particular product or service.
