Monday Lab
1. Purpose:
The purpose of this newsletter is to introduce myself to the students I will be tutoring this
semester at J.M. Hill Elementary School as part of the DMET 262 course at East
Stroudsburg University. In addition, this newsletter serves as an introduction of myself to
the child(ren)s parent or guardian. In this newsletter, I share with the children and their
families my background such as where I live, about my family, and some of my
hobbies. Additionally, this newsletter features my goals for the students I will be
working with as well as some advice for them as they begin the school year. I also share
some of my favorite books, quotes, websites, and places.
2. Audience:
The primary audience for this newsletter will be students at J.M. Hill Elementary school
in grades 3 5. The ages of these students will range between 8 and 11 years old. In
addition, the audience for this letter will include students parents, guardians, and/or
families. The age range for this secondary group will vary.
3. Typefaces used:
Aharoni in size 32 was used for the name plate. Verdana in size 11 and bolded was used
for headings, including the school name and semester at the top of the page. Rod in size
11 was used for paragraphs and the remainder of the text.
4. DTP principles:
Dominate Element: The dominate element is the image of books located on the left side
of the newsletter.
Legibility: I chose lettering that I believe will be easy to read. Using display and text
typefaces appropriately, using size 11 for text, and contrasting headings by bolding text
all contributed to the legibility of the document.
Alignment: The headings, paragraphs, and image are all aligned.
Grouping: I grouped items by similar content. The clearest example of this is the
grouping of the required content of favorite book or subject, educational website, and
quote under the heading of some of my favorites.
Balance: The two columns are balanced and there is only one dominate element.
Unity: Each of the sections in the newsletter fit together as one complete unit. All of the
information works together to give the students and their families a better sense of who I
am.
