Importance of Emergency
Preparedness Plans:

Backing records with technology ensures that records


are able to be recovered during times of crisis
Rapid record recovery helps victims of disaster receive
proper care, because their information can be
accessed by a computer with the same software.
Having proper procedures and protocols for
evacuations is necessary in healthcare facilitiesproperly securing patients onsite allows incoming
patients to be cared for better.

In Case of.Bomb Threat


Obtain as much information from threat as possible
from telephone informant.
Contact security and 911
Evacuate area and do not return until ALL CLEAR is
given.
Answer to security until law enforcement arrives
Do not handle suspicious packages, and make note
of any suspect behavior or items.
Do not apprehend any person, but inform police and
security of anyone who is out of place
Be observant. Get description of suspicious
person/people
DO NOT TAKE BOMB THREATS LIGHTLY

In Case of.Hurricane
Take hurricane warnings seriously
Discharge patients if condition
and time allows
Prepare supplies for influx of
emergency victims
Move patients to higher level
floor
Plug all vital equipment into
backup generator plugs
Prepare for power outages
Keep sanitation supplies available

In Case of.Tornado
Move all patients and families to
innermost, lowest level of the facility
Plug all vital equipment into generated
power supplies
Discharge any patients that can go
home, if time allows
Evacuate and cut power to all
elevators
Stay inside until All Clear is given by
authorities
Be prepared with emergency supplies,
as there may be incoming victims

In Case of.Fire
Mark all emergency exits clearly
Have escape maps and fire extinguishers throughout
building
Have fire drills often
Know how to use extinguisher-PULL AIM SQUEEZE
SWEEP
Know employee role in evacuations
KNOW RACE-RESCUE ACTIVATE CONFINE EXTINGUISH
Listen for code announcements and ALL CLEAR

In Case of.Flood

If flooding is a possibility,
move all patients and vital
equipment to higher floors
Discharge patients if patient
condition and time allows
Plug all emergency equipment
into plugs that have generator
back up
Avoid having patient contact
with flood waters, as flood
water carries infection and
