Lesson Cycle

Lesson Title/Topic: Shape Poems


Target Concept: 110.15. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 4
(4) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Poetry. Students understand, make inferences and
draw conclusions about the structure and elements of poetry and provide evidence from text to
support their understanding. Students are expected to explain how the structural elements of
poetry (e.g., rhyme, meter, stanzas, line breaks) relate to form (e.g., lyrical poetry, free verse).
(16) Writing/Literary Texts. Students write literary texts to express their ideas and feelings
about real or imagined people, events, and ideas. Students are expected to:
(B) write poems that convey sensory details using the conventions of poetry (e.g., rhyme, meter,
patterns of verse).
Lesson Objectives:
Students will show understanding of shape poems by turning in a poem, in which the
shape has been predetermined.

Materials: Computer, Promeathean Board, PowerPoint, pen/pencil, and handouts of various


shapes
Prediction: If something is going to go wrong, it will be in the instructional delivery with
information being left out. To compensate for this, if it occurs, I will refer back to the
information that I left out and proceed with the lesson.

and different ways to create shape poems
and lecture showing and describing shape

Take notes on a worksheet to put in their


writing journal for future reference

Guided Practice:
I choose a circle shape and pizza topic to
model a shape poem
Check for Understanding:
When students give their input, ask
questions to make sure they understand
why a specific word or phrase would be
used for the particular shape
Independent Practice:
Hand out various shapes to each group for
students to make their own shape poem
Check for Understanding:
Walk around checking on the progress of
the students' poems and asking and/or
answering questions
Closure:
Recap what has been taught and make sure
there are not any more questions

Encourage students to use other shapes not
used in the lesson to create more shape
poems
