alcoholism

anorexia.

Alcohol use among teens increases the risk of both date rape
and suicide significantly. A 2005 National Survey on Drug Use
and Health estimated there were eleven million underage
drinkers in the United States.
The ratio of anorexia nervosa between teenage girls and boys is
approximately 9:1. The disorder of continual fasting translates
into adulthood and can reduce an average height woman to
less than eighty pounds in its final stages. Nearly 1000 women
die as a result each and every year.
Binging consists of episodes of starvation followed by
uncontrollable eating, and generally goes hand in with bulimia.

Bulimia, which consists of eating followed by purging, tends to

affect whites more than any other race, though this is changing.
Ninety-five to ninety-eight percent of those affected tend to be
women, though; again, there is a small growing shift towards
men. While it can affect children as young as six it generally
begins in teenage years and will continue into adulthood, and is
more than five and one half times as likely to occur among
those who are in or will enter college.
Sixty percent of middle school students interviewed stated that
they have been bullied. Twenty percent of high school students
interviewed stated that they have considered suicide as a result
of bullying they have endured.

Dating abuse is only just now becoming recognized as a serious

issue. More often than not it is the boy who becomes violent to
the girl, generally over issues of actual or imagined jealousy,
and can lead to physical violence or date rape. Forty percent of
teenage girls ages 14 to 17 say they know someone their age
that has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend. Also see Rape

While much of child pornography comes from Eastern Europe,
child erotica is a growing concern in the U.S. due to the
Internet. In 2006, three men were arrested in Florida and
Alabama for maintaining a string of child erotica websites,
having recruited girls as young as six years old. Rather than
discouraging such exploitation, hundreds of similar sites have
appeared as a result, with many parents all too eager to profit
off of the photographs of their children, mostly girls.

While far more prevalent in Third World countries, prostitution

does exist in the U.S., more frequently occurring among
runaways, who will prostitute themselves on the streets in
order to survive. The Internet, however, has opened new paths
for solicitation by the girls or boys themselves or through
pimps, who exploit and abuse them. Teenage prostitution is
generally accompanied by feeling of low self-esteem. Boys tend
to be prostituted in homosexual environments.

Rape Hotline

1.866.210.5231 RAINN offers a sexual assault hotline that is answered by a

network of agencies, many of which do not offer crisis
counseling over the phone.

If averaged throughout a 24-hour day, every 45 seconds

someone in the United States is sexually assaulted.
One out of every seven women currently in college has been
raped, however, nine out of ten women raped on campus never
tell anyone about the rape.
One in ten men is raped in his lifetime; one in seven of those
victims will have been assaulted before the age of 18.
More than 61.5% of rapes are never reported to law
enforcement.
Approximately 28% of rape victims are raped by their
husbands, 35% by an acquaintance, and 17% by a relative other
than spouse.
74% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by assailants well
known to the victim.

As far as we are aware, no other hotline exists for peer

pressure.

As far as we are aware, no other hotline exists for teen

pregnancy.

Ours is the only listing for rape of any kind with toll-free

Whether it has to do with drugs or alcohol or sex, learning how

to say no is not always an easy choice to make, especially for a
teen.
In 2009, a total of 409,840 infants were born to 1519 year
olds. Teenage pregnancy accounts for more than $9 billion per
year in costs to U.S. taxpayers for increased health care and
foster care, increased incarceration rates among children of
teenage parents. The children of teenage mothers are more
likely to have lower school achievement and drop out of high
school, have more health problems, be incarcerated at some
time during adolescence, give birth as a teenager, and face
unemployment as a young adult.

A female child victim is seven times more likely to be revictimized as an adult.

Nearly six out of ten sexual assaults occur at the victims
home or the home of a friend, relative, or neighbor.
One in fifteen rape victims contract a sexually transmitted
disease as a result of being raped.
One in fifteen rape victims become pregnant as a result of
being raped.
The United States has the worlds highest reported rape rate
of all countries that publish such datathirteen times higher
than England and more than twenty times higher than Japan.
61% of rape victims are females under the age of 18.

Suicide Hotline
for Teens

1.866.210.5429 There are three other suicide lines listed; one can only be
reached from Ohio and the others have answering
machines. Unlike other suicide hotlines, we take a
proactive approach. We do not ask questions as to whether
the caller has a plan or whom they have told or how they
are feeling. We try and learn why they feel their lives are
hopelessdid they just get fired? Did they just have a
break-up? Did someone they loved just die? We try to get
at the root of their emotions and fix the issue. If they were
evicted, we try to find them shelter. If they were diagnosed
with an illness, we try and find them a treatment and give
them hope. We believe that if you just calm a person down,
once the call is ended, the pain begins again. This to us is
unacceptable.

While most teenagers feel as though they are immortal,

venereal diseases know no age boundaries. A 2008 national
study found that 25% of all teenage girls in the U.S. were
infected with at least one sexually-transmitted disease. That
means that each of them either gave it to or received it from at
least one partner.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young adults
and adolescents 15 to 24 years of age, ranking highest among
Native American youth as does alcoholism. Attempted suicide
ranks highest among female Hispanic teens, but in far greater
numbers.
