LESSONSUMMARY/OVERVIEW
Thislessonwilltakeplaceina7thgradesocialstudiesclassroom.Thestudentswillbebrokenintogroupsofa
reasonablenumber,andthenhandedascenarioonafamilywithvaryingincomes.Studentswillthenhavetomake
paymentsthatatypicalfamilywouldhavetomake(i.e.healthinsurance,groceries,diningout,carinsurance,etc.).
Basedoftheirincomegivensomestudentswillfindthistaskdifficulttocompletewhileothersmaynotfindthe
samedifficulty.Oncetheyhavecompletedtheactivityeachgroupwillsharewhattheywereabletopayforwith
theirincomeanddiscusswhatthisactivitymadethemthink/feelaboutpoverty.Ichosethislesson,becauseI
thoughtitwouldgivestudentsarealisticideaofhowpovertyaffectsfamilies.Seeingthatotherpeerswereableto
goouttodinneronceaweekwhiletheywerentevencapableofpayingtheircarinsuranceshowstherealityofwhat
povertydoestoafamily.Italsobringsouttheirvaluesthinking;whenyoumakeadecisionaboutwhereyour
moneygoesyouhavetofirstconsiderwhatyouvaluemost.Povertyandvaluesthinkinggoeshandinhandwith
howweutilizeourresourcesandwhohastheabilitytousemorethanothers.Ifeelthatthetopicofpovertyties
directlytosustainabilityandtheusefulnessofourresourcesandbeingsurethatthereisequalityforallwhouse
them,keepinginmindthefuturegenerations.Attheconclusionofthislesson,studentswillbeaskedtojournalin
theirpreviouslyprovidednotebooksaboutonecauseofpoverty(possiblyonewediscussedinclass),andwaysthat
wecouldcombatthatinthefuture.
