Grape Seed

From the beginning of time, grapes have been used for their nutritional and medicinal value.
Every part of the grape, from the ripe grape, the unripe grape, the dried grape (raisin), and even
the leaf have been used to treat one kind of ailment or another. What is most commonly known
about the grape is that it is a powerful antioxidant.

How it works: Grape seeds contain chemicals called oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes.
These chemicals are primarily known for their antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are a substance
that kills the free radicals that damage DNA and kill cells. These free radicals can cause all kinds
of problems, including heart disease and cancer.

Also found in grape seeds are flavonoids, which along with acting as an antioxidant, work as an
inflammatory.

Uses: According to many studies, grape seeds are powerful antioxidants, therefore they have also
been reported as being a chemical that reduces the occurance of cancer, reduces the severity of
cancers that do occur, and acts against any cancer that does occur.

Studies have also shown that grape seed oil acts as an antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory,
and anti-allergin. It is known to build the enzyme system that aids in digestion and strengthen the
immune system.

Grape seeds have the ability to open up and widen the blood vessels; fight the clumping together
of blood platelets, which could result in blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes; and fight the
thinning of capillaries that would allow blood elements and waste that the blood carries out of the
body to pass throught the capillary walls and get to the tissue on the outside. They can help treat
chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and edema.

Dosage: As a daily supplement to protect yourself from free radical damage, take 15-150 mg, 1-
3 times per day.

To treat chronic veous insufficiency (CVI), take 150-300 mg per day.

To treat edema, take 200-400 mg a day for 10-30 days.

Toxicity: Grape seed extract is not recommended for children, pregnant women, or women who
are breastfeeding, however grapes are.

Grape seed extract may act as a blood-thinner, therefore the risk of bleeding can increase if
taking this with other blood-thinners.
