    HeteronormativityinLifesPriorandPresent
    Inmylifeandmypersonalexperience,heteronormativityhasalwaysbeenaconceptthat
    myfamilyhaslivedby.Notjustmyimmediatefamilyeither,whenIsaymyentirefamily,I
    meanmyENTIREfamily.Growingupwasinteresting,Ialwaysthoughtheterosexualisticideals
    werethecorrectandagreeablewayoflife.Evenupthroughmiddleschool,Ineverquestioned
    anythingofthatsort.Eventothisday,Iveneverbeenabletositdownandunderstand,
    comprehend,andcapacitatewhatanyofitmeansmoreimportantly,whyitevermattered.
    IlivedinasmalltowninWisconsinmyentirelife.Everyoneknowseveryone,anynews
    getsaroundandthewholetownknows.Itsallgossip.Sonaturally,itscollectivisticidealsof
    traditionallifestylesofheteronormativitybeingacceptableandhomosexualitybeingrepulsive,
    nooneidentifiedasanythingotherthanstraight.Noteveninhighschool,didasingleperson
    comeout.Therewasonemale,inaparticularinstance,whomovedtomytownandgotbullied
    severelyonadailybasissimplybecauseofhissexualorientation.Andnoonereallybotheredto
    questionorobjecttothis,becauseitwasanorminourHighSchoolssociety.Ontopofthis,the
    communityhadidealsofthesamevalue.Withthatbeingsaid,thetownbeingstuckinitsown
    blindsightedmindset,noonewasexposedtothecomprehensivenessandcapabilityofknowing
    someonewhowashomosexual.Therefore,thisstandardofthenarrowmindedcultureIgrewup
    inshouldexpectedlyreflectonmyopiniononhomosexuality,right?Infact,itwastheexact
    oppositeformesee,goingthroughlifeandexperiencingsomerealworldstrugglesbeforeeven

    beingintroducedtotherealworldchangesaperson.Maturingmuchfurtherandfasterthan
    peersisdifficult,asitallowsapersontoseetheworldinanewway,butitdisappointsaperson
    becausetheycantunderstandhowothersdontseeit.Thisismycorrelationtosexual
    orientation.Nooneshouldbeaffectedbyanyoneelse'ssexualityotherthanoneselves.Thiswas
    aconceptIunderstoodveryearlyon.So,onceIwasabletounderstandsexualorientation,Ijust
    hadthispredispositiontobeacceptingofeveryone,despitewhatthecommunityaroundmyself
    hadbelieved.Imafirmbelieverinformingyourownopinionsandindoingthatisadelicate
    processbecausethereareexternalandinternalconflictsthatcansoeasilypersuadeaperson.
    Afterbeingexposedtothepanelsstories,itonlyconfirmedmybeliefs.Ihaventreally
    beensubjecttootheragreeablenesstomystandpointonsexualorientationupuntilthelateyears
    ofhighschoolandcomingintocollege.Itsrefreshingtohearpeoplesstoriesandhowtheyve
    beensuccessfulinlovingthemselves.Thatinitself,makeslifeworthwhile.Thatbeingsaid,as
    happyasIamforacommunitywhohasstruggledforsuchalongtimeingainingequalityand
    approval,thisisadoubleedgedsword.AsopposedtotheideaIamofdisagreeingordisliking
    someonefortheirsexualorientation,inasense,ifyoudonotagreewithhomosexuality,youare
    belittled.Now,thisisntthescenarioorcaseforme,inparticular,butpeoplecanwithholdtheir
    beliefsandpreferenceswhilemaintainingrespectforLGBTQAcommunitymembers,butthe
    samestandardisnotheldfortheLGBTQAcommunityrespectingpeople'sbeliefsand
    preferences.Thisisanissuethatclearlyneedsworkasdoestheprogressionofsocietyasa
    whole.However,inmyinstance,Igrewupbelievingthatheteronormativitywasjustdefault
    andthateveryonewaslikethat,untilIhadthecapacitytounderstandhowvastlydifferentweall
    trulycanbe.AsIstated,IhavebeenthroughalotofthingsthatindividualsmaycriticizeandI
