Michael Gass is the Chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Cocoordinator of the Outdoor Education Program at the University of New
Hampshire. His work with the use of adventure therapy began in 1978.
He is currently a Professional-in-Residence at the Marriage and Family
Center at UNH. He serves as a consultant for a number of therapeutic
and business organizations.
This is a Secondary Source: This article discusses an experimental trial,
ran by psychologists at the University of New Hampshire, which took
place in 2013 that tested whether or not adventure therapy made a
difference in stress. 35 adults seeking counseling in a local practice in
Florida were asked to volunteer for the trial. The adults were asked to
self-report their own stress levels after completing multiple outdoor
activities. At the end of the trial, the psychologists examined the
patients results and compared them on three different scales. The
different scales compared their stress levels to the level of their
participation involved in the outdoor activities.
This article relates to my topic because it implements the effects that
adventure therapy can have on adult stress. The article helped my
understanding of adventure therapy and the impact it can actually
have on the lives of people.
Reflection: The article focuses primarily on the effects of adventure
therapy of adults around the age of 40 with a Standard Deviation of 12
years. The patients self-reported their thoughts, feelings, emotions,
etc. after participating in and completing different outdoor activities.
For example, some of the activities were: mountain biking, hiking,
canoeing, team building skills, and problem solving activities. After the
trial was over and the data was analyzed, the researchers found that in
some scenarios adventure therapy did help reduce stress, depression,
addiction, etc. This article really helped me understand the difference
adventure therapy can have on an individual struggling.
