Helios can maintain a constant speed and power, changing the speed is as simple as
changing gears. Also, because of our geared motor, Helios can carry more weight
without slowing the speed.
No wind-up or assembly is required before starting, all you need to do is give it sun!
As Helios runs, it gains potential energy from the sun at a rate of 1.3 J per second,
making energy loss not a problem.
Even though solar panels cost more than rubber bands or springs, solar energy is the

HOW IT WORKS
Helios is solar powered. We attached three solar panels to the motor.
The motor then moves gears which turn the front axle. The axle is also
connected to a series of gears on the other side of the car which move a
long lego rod which slowly moves towards our switch in our circuit. The
switch is composed of a wire touching a penny, and when the rod breaks
the circuit it is moving the wire away from the penny. We have it set so
that the rod breaks the circuit at five meters so that Helios will stop, but
you can easily change the distance traveled.

Our car can actually go 5 meters!

We used this video of our car to calculate the
energy transfers and speed. However, the
potential energy will always depend on the
amount of power the panels can get from the
sun. If the sun is at a more direct angle, or
the sun is stronger at a certain time, Helios
will go faster and therefore have different
amounts of energy. However, our data and
numbers here still prove that our car will be
the most reliable.

The Braking System

We measured that the rod has to be out 21 cm

for Helios to stop at 5m.

Because of this system, you can actually change the distance traveled. If the rod is out more than
21 cm, it will travel further and vice versa. This system also ensures that Helios will always go 5
meters because it is run by gears. You can precisely measure out distance traveled, and you don't
have to rely on the speed of our car to be correct in order for it to stop at 5 meters.

Helios can be adjusted to travel farther than

five meters! This is a video of the car without
the braking rod in the car. Our car could travel
forever if it had enough sunlight, but we
decided to stop it before we bored you with an
extremely long video.
The significance of our braking system is the
fact that it will always go exactly how far you
need it to, because it is based on axle rotations
and gears. This means speed plays no factor in
distance traveled. In different tests with
different sunlight power, the car went the same
distance, with the braking system aligned the
same, but had different speeds because of the
suns power difference.

Speed vs. Time

Here is a time vs. speed graph. In
the beginning Helios is at 0 m/s
because it is not moving. As you
can see here, it has the same speed
from 1 second to 9 seconds. It then
stops at 10 seconds. You can rely
on Helios to always have a constant
speed because of our geared motor.
Adding more weight wont affect the
speed of our car as long as it isnt a
drastic amount of weight.

Energy Conversion
As you can see here, each second
Helios gains potential energy(PE)
and then converts it to kinetic
energy(KE). That is why the total
energy is rising but the potential
energy is always the same. At
each second, the PE not converted
to KE is converted to thermal
energy. Since our car is the same
speed, the kinetic energy remains
constant at 0.1175 J.

Constantly gaining potential energy from the

sun makes energy loss not a problem here
and the kinetic energy will always be there so
theres no need to worry!
