Cap-and-Trade Solution for Climate change

By: Brenda Munguia

Are you worried about greenhouse gases? Well, I have

a solution that may help.
My proposed solution is a Well-Designed Cap-and-Trade Program to Fight Global Warming. It
is a plan for government to place a limit, or cap, on the levels of carbon pollution from industries
and be able to reduce this cap yearly to reach a set pollution target. Since the cap will decrease
each year, it would cut the industrys total greenhouse gas emissions to the limit set by
regulation (David Suzuki Foundation). Now, knowing that there is a limit, this will force polluters
that exceed their emissions quota to buy unused quota from other companies, and because of
this, the government will need to create and distribute pollution quotas, which would be through
a fair auction. This will then create an incentive for firms to cut back their emissions and be able
to sell their pollution quotas rather than purchasing them. With this system, the market will be
able to determine the prices of quotas. Using the cap-and-trade system will ensure the
decrease in pollution and will give companies an economic incentive to find better ways to

reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and be able to support clean energy (David Suzuki
Foundation).

Laws Implemented to help stop climate change

Climate change has become a big issue for many states in the U.S. and
California is one of the only states that has enforced laws that try to stop
climate change from advancing. The main goal of AB 32 and Bill 1275 is to
move to more eco friendly energy methods that do not pollute toxic
greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
