Special Olympics College Cup Boston

I. Description of College Cup Boston event

Goal:
The six colleges of the Fenway (Emmanuel, Simmons, Wentworth, Wheelock,
MCPHS, MassArt) would participate in a big fundraising event for Special Olympics.
Each college would raise money separately and the winner of the College Cup would
be the college that raises the biggest amount of money. College students would then
compete against each other in teams representing their own college through various
semi-athletic activities. Each activity is worth a certain amount of points depending
on its difficulty. The loosing teams college would then deposit the points to the
winning them thus increasing the colleges pot. By the end of the event, the winner is
the College that has gained the most amount of points and the totality of the money
(from entree fee + potential donations). Money acquired from the entry fee and
donations would be given to the Special Olympics organization. We estimate that an
entry fee of $10.00 is low enough to be feasible for students, while also high enough
to bring in significant money for fundraising.

Activities:
In order to allow everyone to participate and to be in the theme of the Special
Olympics, students would compete in various semi-athletic activities.
Possible events are as follows and may be subject to change:
-Obstacle race, three-legged race, sack race
-Trivia battle
-Dodgeball
-Riddle race (similar concept as the amazing race)/ scavenger hunt
-Athletic activities such as flag football, beanbag toss game, and basketball game
-Carnival games on the side: pie eating contest, ring toss, dead ant, tug of war, dunk
tank, frisbee, capture the flag, egg toss, dance-off, minute to win it Students can
come and go to these activities, which will be happening throughout the day unlike
the big activities like the relay race and dodgeball game, which will be at scheduled
times.

Other requirements:
-Volunteers for referee. (May reach out to COF intramural referees to volunteer)
-Provide snacks and beverages for students by potential sponsors
-Location: Emmanuels field, Roberto Clemente Field, 400 Fenway, Boston, MA,
02115
-Event time: 9am-3pm

II. How to attract young college students to participate in the event?

-Create an event that is centered on colleges competing against others to raise
money for Special Olympics
-Have the college that wins the most amount of events win something at the end of
the event (ex. Cup that is passed around the COF schools annually)
-Allow students to work with Special Olympic athletes possibly
-Have a variety of sports/activities for the day (allow students that are less physical
to also have events they can compete in)
-Possibly pair with local companies (such as that at college fest) for donations
-Create a lot of buzz around the event (social media, marketing, incentives)
-Place the event at the beginning of the academic year when students are trying to
meet other students
-Allow students to bring family and friends to watch the event
-Make it affordable ($10 entry fee)
III. How to advertise to COF schools?

Social Media:
-Create Facebook page with details about the event including time, date, location,
etc.
-Create Instagram account and post pictures of the College Cup, the advertisements,
a countdown, pictures of COF rivalries in the past, etc.
-Reach out to each school via Twitter and promote the event.
-Allow students to sign up online as well as in person

Advertisements:
-Post ads in every school all around the campus (table tents, posters, door tags,
flyers)
-Post flyers in heavily traveled areas at various schools, post in bathrooms, lunch
areas, bulletin boards, etc.
-Post ads in all businesses surrounding COF
Contact:
-Contact people in charge of sending out undergraduate emails at each school and
send out emails advertising for the event
-Contact coaches at each school and suggest they get their teams involved in the
event
-Contact the COF schools service learning centers
-Contact COF intramurals to send out email to their email list

IV. Survey Data

If Special Olympics were to put on a fundraising event for

the COF community, where the various schools could
compete against each other, what kind of events would
you like to see?

-Make sure you advertise well in advance for the event so that way people can
plan and you can get more participation
-T-shirts/teams/team colors
- I think that if there were flyers around the school and people were promoting it
to increase the excitement that this event will bring. Then I think many students
will attend because it will have the same sense as spirit week.
-An organized schedule
-Snacks Water Prizes Music Good advertisement (email and flyers)
-Food is always exciting like a banquet or a dance or something
-Really try to get a lot of people involved from all of the COF
-Not near finals market A LOT! (Flyers, table tents, emails, etc.)
