What branch of government are you working with?

BILL ANALYSIS
2
The branch of government I am working with is The Senate
What is the bill number?
The Bill number is S. 1832
What is the title of the bill?
The title of the bill is Pay Workers a Living Wage Act.
Are there any key words, phrases, or concepts associated with the bill?
Key words associated with this bill are workers, and living wage.

and Pension, which will consider it before it may or may not go to the Senate or

BILL ANALYSIS

What are the core provisions of the bill?
The core provision of the Bill would be so that every federal contract worker in this
country is paid a living wage with good benefits and the ability to join a union. In
essence, no one who works a forty hour work week should be living in poverty.

What are the estimated costs associated with the bill?

In researching this propose Bill, I could not find a definitive cost associated to this
bill. Some source such as Forbes/ Economics and Finance (2015) estimates that the
Bill would cost 6.6 million jobs as most employers would no longer be hiring laborers
or restaurant worker and paying them $15 an hour, therefore employment would
decrease rapidly.
Do you think you can support this bill?
Yes I can support this Bill because as a single working mother getting paid minimum
wage, I find it very hard to stay afloat economically. Getting $15 an hour would not
only increase my pay check but it would provide an incentive for me to get out of
bed and go to work knowing I will be able to pay my bills.
What are the three strongest reasons you have to support or oppose the
bill?
1. It would increase ones financial stability.
2. It would allow for more financial input in the economy.
3. Families would be less dependent on the government to subsidize their income
by providing food benefit.

Politics
Is there any group or any legislators that oppose your position? Who are
they?
1. Iowa State Senate, Joni Ernst (R) suggests that States can nullify federal laws
they dont like, the war on Iraq should not have ended, people on Medicaid have no
personal responsibility for their health, and now the federal minimum wage is
ridiculous.
2. Presidential hopeful Donald Trump (R) has stated that we cannot do this if were
going to compete with the rest of the world.
3. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) has stated that in the 21st century, it's a disaster, if
you raise the minimum wage
What are their most sound reasons for opposing your position?
1. Joni Ernst: She believes that workers can eventually transition into better-paying
jobs as they acquire more skill
2. Donald Trump: Taxes too high, wages too high would damage the United States
ability to compete internationally.
3. Marco Rubio: "If you raise the minimum wage, you're going to make people more
expensive than a machine, and that means all this automation that's replacing jobs
and people right now is only going to be accelerated
Does the bill have the support of the Leadership in the legislature?

BILL ANALYSIS

Senator Stanley C. Rosenberg has stated that The Legislature is hearing calls to
continue increasing the minimum wage, which is already scheduled to rise to $10
per hour Jan. 1, and then to $11 per hour on Jan. 1, 2017
House Speaker Robert DeLeo has stated that the House leadership supports raising
the minimum wage.
Do your representatives share your position on this issue?
In Michigan, SB 391: Raises the minimum wage to $15 per hour by Jan. 1, 2018.
Sponsor: Sen. Bert Johnson, D-Highland Park, and is supported by Senator Gregory
and Representative Moss.
Have you educated them about your position?
I made a call to Senator Gregorys Office and was informed that he does support the
Bill (Act)
I contacted Representative Jeremy Mosss office and was informed that he does
support the Bill (Act)
I contacted Senator Stabenows Office and was informed that although she does
support an increase in the minimum wage, to get a specific response I would have
to speak with her and she was not available at that time.
Do they sit on a committee that will deal with the legislation?
Based on my conversation with the offices of Senator Vincent Gregory,
Representative Jeromy Moss and Senator Debbie Stabenow they do not sit on the
Committee that deals with S. 1832 ( Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor
and Pension).
