Genre is most commonly thought of as a way to define music, film and writing.
While the typical idea of genre as a category is restricting, its flexibility can provide a
surprising amount of opportunity. Genre should be thought of more as a tool in
classifying rather than a way to refer. Genre does not have to tie things down to a
definition. When you really pick it apart, genre can be ambiguous. This can be scary
because genre no longer simply helps us classify a work. However, it helps us do much
more. It creates room for the artistic freedom of the author and allows the audience to
relate to the piece in their own way.
