Art
Colorado Academic Standards:

1.2: Historical and cultural context are found in visual art.

2.3: Interpretation is a means for understanding and evaluating works of art.
3.1: Demonstrate competency in traditional and new art media, and apply appropriate and
available technology for the expression of ideas.
4.1: The work of art scholars impacts how art is viewed today.
4.2: Communication through advanced visual methods is a necessary skill in everyday
life.

Formative Assessments
1.
Trading Card
Using a Trading Card template, students will research a famous
Renaissance portrait painting and insert the artwork and answer
questions to help students interpret the painting and understand
the time period in which it was created.
Example:

Essential Understandings and Inquiry Questions:

Art can represent and be used to identify a specific time period.

Math and art are related during the Renaissance to uncover geometric, algebraic, and
spatial discovery.
Portraiture can communicate information about model and the surroundings of model.

Inquiry Questions

How did the style of art represent the Renaissance time period?

How was math and art interconnected to reveal new discoveries?

How did portraiture lend itself to inform viewers of people, their interests, their
appearance/clothing, and their environments during the Renaissance?
Misconceptions:

All Renaissance art is religious.

Portraiture has to be realistic.

Math and art are completely separate subjects.

There are no structural rules to art.

2. Renaissance Style Self Portrait

Using image transfer techniques, students will transfer portrait
photo of themselves to wood. Then, applying what they know
about Renaissance portraiture from research, students will
create their own Renaissance style self portrait by using paint
on top of image surface to transform image into a Renaissance
portrait painting, including indications of identity, such as
figure wearing headphones if they like music.

Math
Colorado Standards:

Inquiry Questions:

Standard: 2. Patterns, Functions, and Algebraic Structures

Can computers solve algebraic problems that people cannot solve?

Why?

Nature of Mathematics:
1. Mathematics involves visualization.
2. Mathematicians use tools to create visual representations of problems and ideas that
reveal relationships and meaning.

How are mathematical triangles different from triangles in the

physical world? How are they the same?
Do perfect circles naturally occur in the physical world?

3. Mathematicians construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. (MP)

Big Ideas/Essential questions:

4. Mathematicians use appropriate tools strategically. (MP)

Standard: 4. Shape, Dimension, and Geometric Relationships

How did math impacted the development of art during the

Renaissance?

1. Geometry involves the generalization of ideas. Geometers seek to understand and

describe what is true about all cases related to geometric phenomena.

How did art impact the development of math during the

Renaissance?

3. Mathematicians attend to precision. (MP)

What is the significance of the relationship between math and art

throughout history?

Big Ideas/Essential questions:

How did math impacted the development of art during the Renaissance?
How did art impact the development of math during the Renaissance?
What is the significance of the relationship between math and art throughout history?

Possible Misconceptions:

Math is not related to art.

The history of math is boring
Math has always been the same as it is today

Formative Assessment:

Students will describe and demonstrate their

understanding of the math discovery they have chosen
to research by submitting a rough draft.

Students will create a piece of art using mathematical

techniques.

History
Essential Questions:

How does Math and Art influence the history of the world?

What about the Renaissance time period encouraged human mental growth and innovation?
Inquiry Questions:

What qualifies an event as historically significant rather than simply noteworthy?

What impact have individuals had on history?

CDE History Standards:

History 2. b. Investigate causes and effects of significant events in world history (DOK 1-2)

History 1. a. Evaluate a historical source for point of view and historical context (DOK 2- 3)
Misconceptions:

The Renaissance was limited to art and architecture.

Modern Art and Math have no connection to the History of the Renaissance.
LT and SC:

Learning Target: I can explain what impact important figures and events have had on the history of Art and Math.

Success Criteria: I will analyze a primary source and summarize a significant event or person in the history of Art or Math.
Assessments:

Formative Assessment 1: Primary Source investigation: Students will analyze a primary source relevant to their project topic and write a
summary of the artifact in a one-pager.

Formative Assessment 2: Students will write a paragraph summary of the historic context of their Art and Math subject. This will be used
to support the summative assessment research paper. Students will use peer review to assess each other's work.
