Course Description: This is an introductory course to the Spanish language

and cultures that speak it. The course will focus on developing on students
reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in Spanish, along with
understanding cultural aspects from different Spanish-speaking countries.
Lessons will be based off the state standards and the national Standards for
Language Learning.
Objectives: Students that successfully complete this course will be able to

Communicate with another person in Spanish using basic words,

phrases, and sentences.

Write words, phrases, and sentences in Spanish.

Read words, phrases, and sentences in Spanish.

Make connections between the material in class to aspects of their own

lives.

Understand and explain different cultural celebrations, artifacts,

customs, and perspectives.

Library Hours: Monday-Friday, 7am-5pm

Tutoring: Monday & Friday; 2:30pm-3:30pm
Wednesday; during lunch
*If these times do not work, a meeting can be set up
Expectations:
Materials pencil, blue pen, highlighter, 1-inch binder with filler paper & 2
dividers
Homework Compositions must be typed, all other writing assignments must
be handwritten.

Expectations of teacher I will be available before and after school, and

during tutoring hours. A meeting can be set up if necessary. I will hand back
graded assignments in a timely matter and it is my goal to help each student
reach their potential and become comfortable with the Spanish language.
Parent Contact Parent/Guardian will be notified if a students grade
becomes a matter of concern and student is or in danger of failing the
course. Parent, student, and teacher will come up with solutions and a followup conversation with parent/guardian will take place. A possibility of a
positive notification will be communicated with parent/guardian regarding
student progress.
Grading Policy Letter grades will be given (A-F) on assignments, quizzes,
and tests. Re-takes on tests will be available to anyone who wants to receive
a better grade, with the higher grade out of the two being the one that is
noted.
Rules:
Students will conduct themselves in a manner in accordance with
school policies.
In addition:

Cell phones will only be used to take review questionnaires/short

quizzes

Students will keep an open mind and a respectful attitude when

discussing aspects of Spanish-speaking culture that is different than
their own

Gum is not allowed

If a student expresses a behavior that is an obvious threat to themselves or

others, he or she will be immediately sent to the office.
Discipline strategies will change in accordance with any accommodations
required by an IEP or 504 Plan.

Procedures:
Beginning/Ending Class: Students will be expected to write down their
homework at the beginning of class (which will be posted on the board), once
the bell rings. Students will be dismissed once the teacher excuses them, not
when the bell rings. Students must have their area clean and materials put
away before they leave. If there is any trash or a mess, students must clean
it up before they leave. Leave your area the way you found it and be
courteous to those who sit in your area after you!

Late Work Late work will be accepted. If the absence is excused, students
will be given one day to make up work for each day they are absent, with the
possibility of receiving full credit. If the absence is unexcused, students will
be given one day to make up work for each day they are absent, with the
highest possible grade of the assignment(s) being a C+.
Technology Use Students will be using the computer lab periodically for
research and cell phones on occasion for review. Students must follow the
rules set in the school technology policy which they sign at the beginning of
the school year.
Restroom Policy: It is highly recommended that students use the restroom
during the 5-minute passing period between classes. If not, students should
wait until after the teacher has finished talking in order to ask go to the
restroom. If students cannot wait to go to the restroom while the teacher is
talking, they should silently signal the teacher as to not disrupt the learning
of others. The signal will be explained in class.
Attendance Daily attendance is mandatory in order for each student
receive the benefits of learning a foreign language.
Absences If students are absent, it is THEIR RESPONSIBILITY to obtain
any assignments they missed from the Absent folder of their correct class
period. Excused absences will be accepted in accordance with the
attendance rules in the school handbook. See Late Work.

Acknowledgement

I have read and understand the syllabus for Spanish 1-2 in Ms. Daniels
classroom. I agree to follow the procedures and rules set by Ms. Daniels for
the school year.
