Mitten Mystery
What makes mittens so warm on a cold, snowy day? Complete the
following experiment to see if you can figure it out!
Step 1: Read temperature on thermometer when it is resting on
the table. Temperature: __________.
Step 2: Place the thermometer in the mitten. Set the timer for 1
minute. Read the temperature on the thermometer.
Temperature: ____________.
Step 3: Rub hands together for 15 seconds. Set timer for 2
minutes. Place mitten on one hand and slide the
thermometer into the mitten so it is resting inside the
mitten on your palm. Read temperature on thermometer
after 2 minutes.
Temperature: ____________.

Official Scientific Findings:

1.) Was there a change in the temperature from when the
thermometer was sitting on the table (step 1) to when it was
resting alone in the mitten (step 2)?

Why do you think this was the case?

2.) Was there a change in the temperature from when the

thermometer was resting alone in the mitten (step 2) to when
your hand was in the mitten with the thermometer (step 3)?
