Q and A: Introduction to KQHL

Q: What does KQHL stand for?
A: K stands for what you already know. Just like a scientist, you will use your own personal knowledge as a head start to
conducting your research.
Q stands for questions. You may already have questions on your mind. Readings and/or videos may be what raise
questions that you will document.
H stands for hypothesis. You should be familiar with the typical format for a hypothesis, an ifthen statement that
links cause and effect. You will develop a hypothesis based on prior knowledge and the research you have conducted.
L stands for what did you learn? This is what it is all about, right? Ultimately, what you learn can lead to more research
when new questions arise.
Q: Will we continue using this learning strategy throughout the class?
A: This strategy is based upon the concept that students will learn much more when given a motivation to inquire and
investigate based on their own knowledge and interests. It is likely that we will use this strategy more consistently in the
second semester when I take full responsibility for the class.
Q: If I have questions about what to do next, what should I do?
A: When students are first being introduced to the KQHL method, I expect there to be many questions. Dont hesitate to
ask me for guidance. As we progress in the class, the general rule is you should ask your peers first because often they
have had the same questions and can explain it in a way that is easy to understand. If you still cannot find an answer,
ask the teacher for help.

KQHLThe Greenhouse Effect

Directions: Work with your table partners to research global climate change and the greenhouse effect. Begin with the K section,
and then watch this summary video. Go to the evidence section of the NASA global climate change site and think of 3 research
questions based on what you notice from your research in 3 different evidence categories. Form a hypothesis about the effects
that greenhouse gasses are having. Complete only the KQH portion and get started designing an experiment.
