Tracks Starts

Introduction
In the track events, there is a need to have an efficient start. In this
presentation we will look at:

Standing Start

Crouch Start

The Standing Start


The standing start is use mainly in middle & long distance which are:

800 meter

1500 meter

3000 meter

5000 meter

10,000 meter etc.

Go

The Phases in Standing Start


The On your Marks Phase

The foot is placed up to the starting line but not on it.

The feet are about shoulder width apart to obtain a good balanced

Distributed about 2/3rds of the weight on the front foot

Bend the knees and lean forwards

Arms synchronised with the legs

Remain motionless

The Go Phase

Drive your arms and legs forward

Step through with the back foot first

The Crouch Start


The crouch start is only use when do the sprint events such as:

100 meter

200 meter

400 meter

and hurdles event

The Phases in the Crouch Start


On your mark phase

The right foot should be place on the ground left knee adjacent to the
right ankle

The toe of the left foot should be turned under

Hands should be slightly wider than shoulder width

Arms should be straight but not locked at the elbow

The fingers must be behind the line forming a bridge

The head and neck should be in line with the spine

Set

Hips raised to a position slightly higher than the shoulders

There should be an angle of 90 degrees at the front knee

There should be an angle of 120 degrees on the rear knee

When viewed from the side the shoulder should be above the start line

The head and neck should be in line with the spine

Remain motionless

Go

Exhale

Drive the arms hard

Extend the whole body so there is a straight line through the head, spine
and extended rear leg

Eyes Focused on the track 2 to 3 meters

Run out of the blocks - do not step or jump out of the blocks
