Unit 1: Introduction to Drawing and Recording

Nature Vs Man- made
The emphasis of this assignment is to develop skills with the experimental use
of a range of different recording techniques and the eventual development of
a final piece of artwork inspired by the artists studied.
You have nine weeks to carry out the assignment including all visual work and
notes to explain your ideas and prove your knowledge and understanding.

Recording and presenting your investigations and experiments

provides the evidence that is assessed towards your final grade, it is
imperative that you complete all work set to the best of your ability
and make your presentation clear, legible and visually enticing to
show how well you understand the themes, techniques, artists &
photographers and demonstrate the depth of your investigations and
your skills.
Your work will be marked on how well you:
Record in visual and other forms AO3
Develop ideas through sustained investigations AO1
Use media, techniques and processes AO2
Demonstrate analytical & critical understanding AO1
Review and refine AO2
Reflect on work and progress AO3
Produce a personal, well-resolved response demonstrating critical

Presentation

Add more of your own first hand studies to show your

skills
Use a wide range on tones to show more depth
Blend in outlines
Add more fine detail to show texture and pattern
Use a wider range or mark making techniques in line
studies
Ensure all drawings/sketches are of a consistent quality
Ensure all drawings/sketches are complete
Take a good number of images of each subject group
i.e. food, tool & utensils etc
Try to use different viewpoints/lighting/subjects
Identify on the contact sheet good images by
highlighting/circling, adding a sticker etc
Cross out poor imagery on contact sheet
Annotate good images to explain the positives
Select a few good images to simply edit and print out
larger
Base your printing work on your own drawings and
photographs of mechanical forms
Make sure that you use the appropriate amount of ink
Register each print carefully
Include many different ways of mark making and a
wide range of textures
Colour use of colour carefully
Use artists to inspire you and influence your work
Create many different experimental prints using
different colours and surfaces to print on to
Try to complete all tasks
On clay and plaster smooth/brush off surfaces to
appear smooth/finished
Blend in/disguise any joins
Add lots of images of the artists/ photographers work
Use keywords to highlight the main visual features and
conceptual themes
Add information based on the questions from the visual
literacy sheet
Analyse one chosen image using the how, the what
and the why section of the visual literacy sheet
Add a clear title (the artists name!)
Do your own versions of their work replicating their styles
Fill gaps with copied sections of their work in a variety of
appropriate materials
Fill the page
Consider layout of information on pages
Add flaps, tabs and pull-outs if you are struggling to fit
everything on
Keep handwriting clear and neat or type
Use a consistent style/ font/pen colour
Try to make pages/boards visually appealing
Do not use pixelated images

Make keywords bigger and do not list them

If in doubt keep it simple
Dont waste time double mounting
Cut out neatly and straight
Create a uniform style for the pages/boards

High quality presentation is key 75% of the mark for your work is in the
prep/journal/sketchbook/board, if it is incomplete or illegible your marks
will suffer.
