The second student learning outcome (SLO 2) of the course Geography 1L is that a

student is able to demonstrate their ability in using technology through effectively selecting
geographic equipment and tools (Course Syllabus) and to apply such tools to the task at hand.
SLO 2 specifically says that a student is able to analyze a topographic map and calculate the
local time of any world location using a world time zone map. (Course Syllabus). Meaning that
a student is then able to tell what time it will be in one city based upon its geographic location.
The assignment I have chosen for this student learning outcome is my Week 3 Reading
Quiz where it was a map of the United States and we were to answer what time it would be in
one city given the time in another city. I was able to fully demonstrate my understanding of
geographical locations and its relation to time zones and I scored a perfect score on this reading
quiz. Given the understanding of how the United States is split into four different time zones and
each corresponds to the next closest time zone with a difference of an hour; I was able to
correctly analyze and answer what the time is if the time is 2:00 am in Washington, then the
time will be 5:00 am in Massachusetts. Not only did I need to know how to interpret the data
given the time zones and the longitudes, I also had to have a basic understanding of where the
different states are in the United States.
However, Reading Quiz #3 only satisfied the SPOs of SLO 2, therefore, Ive chosen
another assignment to complete the explanation of my understanding of SLO 2. The assignment
Ive chose to demonstrate my completion of the second student learning outcome is Discussion
6; in which we had to look at a major land form and research how the landform was developed.
For one of my analysis, I chose to analyze Lake Tahoe, and through my research, I was able to
understand that Lake Tahoe was form by faulting around two million years ago. The resulting
water sources for the lake was from when the glaciers melted after the Ice Age and the streams

from the glaciers helped shaped Lake Tahoe. However, a majority of Lake Tahoe Basin is filled
is filled with soil that is consists of approximately 70% sand, this is due to the erosion caused
by the constant stream of Lake Tahoe along its streambed and the land enclosing the stream.
Through this assignment, I was able to demonstrate my ability to use geographic equipment and
then be able to analyze the topography and the surround area around it based upon my
knowledge and the history of the land source.
A specific skill I used was the knowledge of how water streams shape the land and when
there is a water stream, at the bottom of the stream, there will be a build-up of many different
types of sediment due to the water causing erosion along the rocks on the way downstream. As a
result of this phenomenon, Lake Tahoe Basin is filled with soil that consists of 70% sand.
A couple way that I think my knowledge has grown is that I now understand why at the
bottom of many streams, there are smaller sizes of rocks that are in the form of sand or soil. To
add to this knowledge, I understand where water sources originate, and specifically in the sense
of Lake Tahoe, I understood that its water source came from the melting of frozen glaciers after
the end of the Ice Age. With these knowledge in hand, I am able to hone my skills in further
developing my analysis of different landforms.
