Lesson Objectives: To sing with proper singing voice and posture
while standing
To work together as an ensemble
To learn movements/dances for the song Jailhouse Rock
Concert Preparation
Duple Patterns
Standards: Adopted Marshall Public Schools Academic Standards of
Music
Expression of Music (1.1.2 and 1.1.3)
Materials and Resources: Piano, Songs of the 50s Book/CD
Lesson Procedure:
a) Introduction
a. The students will be asked to enter the classroom like they
did last week in order to practice how they will enter the
stage for the concert. Once everyone is in their spots they
can sit and we will warm up with the Hello song and
Backbone up. I will remind students to sit up tall and use
their level three singing voices.
b. After we warm up I will ask the students to stand up tall
and be ready to sing Jailhouse Rock
b) Procedures
a. Students will be standing and I will have them sing through
Jailhouse Rock once. I will be listening to see if they are
annunciating all the words and if they are singing the right
pitches. If there is something that goes very poorly I will
practice that section with them quickly.
b. After our run through I will have the students sit down in
their spots. I will play the CD again and, while they are
singing Jailhouse Rock, I will show them the movements to
the song. I will be up in front of the class and sing with
them while I do all of the motions to Jailhouse Rock. After I
show them the motions I will ask them to stand up and do
them with me. Teaching the motions will take on the same
structure as when I taught them the words and pitches. I
will break the song up into smaller sections. I will teach the
motions to each smaller section and then we will put it all
of the sections together. Once the students have learned
all of the motions we will sing through the entire song while
doing the movements.

c) Transitions
a. Before moving on to learning the motions to a new section
we will always review what we just learned. We will also
run through the song with the motions before we try it with
the CD. Before our final run through with the CD I will
remind the students to stand up straight and tall, get ready
to use level three singing voices, and to smile big.
d) Closure
a. Once they have learned all the motions I will have them do
a run through with the CD. I will be singing less so the
students get used to performing the song on their own. I
will, however, be doing all of the motions with them so if
they get lost they can just watch me. After the run through
I will let the kids know that the next time we are all
together they will be performing their song for me.
Accommodation: Depending on if students need more help with
words and/or motions, I can spend more time on the sections of the
song they seem to be having a harder time with. We also have a few
students who are injured. If the motions are painful for them to do or
they are physically unable to do them, we will either modify the
motions or tell them to not do them at all. One of our first graders has
Cochlear implants so I need to wear a microphone when I teach so he
can hear me better over all the other noise.
Assessment: (Observational) One part of my assessment will be how
well they are singing the lyrics of the song. The other part of my
assessment will be how well they can do the motions and sing at the
same time. The final part of my assessment will be how well the
students are listening to the music and matching tempo and pitches.
