N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Trudy Morrison Date of Activity: Oct. 3rd & Nov. 12th
Faculty name: Mary OConnell
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
-On October 3rd I attended a 4 hour Community Resilience and Emergency Civilian
Casualty Care Training that taught us about emergency preparedness for disasters and mass
casualty events. We were taught what to do in the case of a shooter at our location, what to do if
there were a major power outage, and what a proper emergency preparedness kit should contain,
as well as an individual first aid kit. We were also given a small first aid kit for keeping, which is
in the center console of my vehicle. The coordinator for the training belongs to an organization
called Medical Reserve Corps of Southern Arizona MRCSA, to which he extended an invitation
to join along with an email containing a link for the application. This is definitely something I
am interested in. On November 12th I worked alongside Yvette Mathesen in the SILC lab. I
learned many of the behind the scenes tasks that it takes to run the SILC lab smoothing. She
organizes the calendar for many students and faculty and sets up learning stations according to
the faculty requests for a specific topic of learning, i.e. manikins with wounds for a wound care
class. She also sets up the lab for individual learning for students to come in and practice skills.
She mainly coordinates for the BSN program, but has made herself available to any student or
faculty requesting her help; whether it be a student who may need further explanation on a
specific subject or a faculty member looking for supplies. I witnessed both of these during my 4
hours with her, not to mention various times throughout my time at the College of Nursing. She
also schedules and works with several student volunteers throughout the semester. One important
thing I would like to mention, most recently she has been bringing in food to have available just

because as she has been made aware that some students have not been eating due to lack of
funds. She does this in a casual manner that is unobtrusive to the students in need and in way that
no one else will recognize what is being done, but also makes the students feel comfortable
getting a meal.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
-The training on Oct. 3rd was at the Tucson Fire Department at 300 S. Fire Central Pl. and
was 4 hours in length. My professional activities time with Yvette M. was in the SILC lab at the
College of Nursing and was 4 hours in length.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
-Both experiences were of great value to me. The training provided me with valuable
information that I can pass on to friends and loved ones, and has enabled me to be further
prepared in case of an emergency or catastrophic event. It also provided me with the opportunity
to be a part of an organization that can help others and can train others how to be prepared as
well. Working in the SILC lab has given be a deeper appreciation for what Yvette does to keep
the lab running smoothly and to keep things organized. She works so hard to provide a positive
learning experience for the students and positive working experiences for the faculty.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
-Yes, I would strongly recommend both. I left the training with a wealth of knowledge
and as well as resource to become a part of something much bigger than myself, the MRCSA. As
for the SILC, we should all have the opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation for those who do
all the heavy lifting to make our learning all that it can be; this is something that can easily be
taken for granted.
