Grade ______4/5________

Activity ___Math Pattern Art: Christmas Ornaments_

Goals/Key questions
Goals: Students will take what they have learned in their math patterns unit and
apply it creatively in an individual art creation. Students will
identify how math patterns are found in the real world through
their art creations.
Objective (connected to PofS):
Math 4: SLO 2. Translate among different representations of a pattern, such as a
table, a chart or concrete materials.
Math 5: GLO Patterns: Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems.
Art 4\5: Purpose 3: Students will decorate items personally created-A. Details,
patterns or textures can be added to two-dimensional works.

Pre lesson Considerations

Lesson overview of main ideas to be learned and pre-learning required:
-Prior knowledge in identifying and creating patterns learned in math for the past
two weeks.

(seating arrangement):
-Popsicle sticks

-Hot glue gun and regular glue

-Various colours of yarn

-Various colors of paper

doing?
Include Key questions,
logistics, key concepts that
will be addressed, methods
of formative assessment
-Ask students to quietly
raise their hands if they are
excited for Christmas this
year.
-Tell students that today
they will be creating
decorations to take home
and put on your tree, place
around the house, or give
as gifts to family members
etc.
-Tell students that they will

What are the students doing?

-Students will be raising their hands

and sitting quietly at their desks.
-Students will remember their math
work with problems and will take this
prior knowledge and apply it to their
decoration created patterns.

be taking the knowledge

they have attained in math
class about patterns and
apply it to two creative art
projects.
Ask students to quietly clear
their desks of all books,
paper, and supplies except
for their pencil crayons,
glue and scissors.
Christmas Ball Patterns
-Have the various supplies
needed for the ball creation
on music stand to hold up
for students.
-Show the class the
example I created.
-Ask students if they can
see the pattern created on
the Christmas ball.
- Explain that the decoration
is made from 6 circles cut
out, folded in half and glued
together. Before ANY gluing
is done, instruct students to
draw a picture or image
that means something to
them on the two white
circles provided.
REMEMBER: the images
should be the same to stay
in accordance to creating a
repeating pattern.
-Step 1: decide which two
colors of paper you want to
use in your pattern. Go to
back table and select the 2
colors and return to your
seat.
-Step 2: decide your image
and draw it on both of the
white circles.
-Step 3: cut out the white
circles and use one to trace
the remaining 4 circles
needed (two circles per
sheet chosen.
-Step 4: cut out remaining 4
colored circles.

-Students will be quietly clearing their

desks of material and taking out their
supplies.
-Students will be seated in desks and
listening to instruction.

-Students will be asked to hold their

questions until the end of the
explanation so that no steps are
missed.

-students will be actively watching as

steps are explained.

(A timer may be set and each step

may be worked through as a class
depending on how students are
feeling that day)

-Step 5: fold each circle in

half.
-Step 6: using your glue
stick, glue one half the
folded circle to the next
circle in your pattern.
Repeat step 6 until all 6
circles are glued together in
the repeating pattern.
-Step 7: take your circle to
me or Mrs. Gilbert to have a
whole put in so we can add
a string so it can be hung
up.

Activity
To be
started as a
second
project for
students
who finish
early.

*Remind students that this

is quiet individual work with
hushed voices/ whispers
only to their neighbors. Tell
students that if they are
working quietly I will play
their Christmas concert
music quietly in the
background as they work on
their crafts.
-Direct the one table at a
time to go to the back table
to collect their material for
the Christmas ball
decoration.
-Instruct students to begin
working on their
decorations once they are
at their seats.
Gods Eye Craft
To be completed when
ball is fin.
(Decide if will describe
immediately after first craft
instruction or not)
-Step 1: glue popsicle sticks
together and set aside to
dry.
-Step 2: decide which colors
of yarn you will be using for
your Gods eye.
-Step 3: Take one color of
yarn and wrap it over and
around one stick, then on a

-Students will wait quietly for their

table to be selected.
-Students will gather paper from back
table.
-Students will begin following the
steps listed above and on the board.

-Students will be paying close

attention to the detail of instruction
and listening to the steps.
-students will be in their desks
working quietly and allowed to
whisper with their peers.

and over and around it,
then on a diagonal to the
next stick and over and
around it, and so on.
Continue for four or more
turns around the cross, until
the eye is as big as you
want it. Hold on to the end
of the yarn.
-Step 4: tie a length of a
different color to the first
one with a knot. Continue
wrapping the yarn around
the cross as before.
Step 5: Continue wrapping
different colors of yarn to
create a pattern on your
cross.
The pattern should be
identifiable as a
repeating pattern to
your peers beside you.
-Allow students to work on
their decorations until the
end of class.
Activity is to be completed
on Friday.
-Some students will have
started their Gods eyes
already once finished the
first craft.

-Students will be working on their

decorations and silent reading if they
finish both projects.

Assessment: Students will be formatively assessed through the use of

triangulation. I will be observing that they are working on creating patterns in a
creative way and engaging students in conversations as I answer questions and
discuss the work they are producing. I will observe their products created and
identify the patterns students made by having them explain their creations to me. I
will know student have effectively taken their prior knowledge of patterns into the
art lesson, when they have produced identifiable patterns that they can effectively
explain to me.
Accommodations/Modifications:
-Set a timer during the instruction periods to time each individual step of the
process to ensure students stay on track and do not miss a step.

-Accommodate students who learn kinaesthetically by providing extra instruction

once they have their materials at their desks, if needed.
-Accommodate students who need extra time, and those who finish quickly by
having two art projects to be completed at their own paces.
Extension and extra time activity:
-Extra time activity is to have students create the Gods Eyes when finished the
Christmas balls.
-Students may also continue their work on their Mandelas or silent read.
Reflection on how the lesson went.
