Bates, Henry. (1892). The naturalist on the river Amazons a record of adventures, habits of
animals, sketches of Brazilian and Indian life, and aspects of nature under the equator,
during eleven years of travel. (Reprint of the unabridged ed.). London: J. Murray.
Henry Bates is a naturalist that has traveled to many countries to study the land and
culture. Henry is famous for his rainforest journeys and for this diary and book written
during his Amazon rainforest excursion.
This source is a primary and book source. The book includes first-hand experiences and
reflections on a different culture and area in the Amazon rainforest. The author
experiences travel and insight on not only travel and culture but also a naturalist look on
travel.
This book helps a lot with reading a first-hand experience. The travel is also much more
extreme and opposite of Chris McCandless experience so it would be interesting to
compare and contrast the two.
REFLECTION: This book includes different chapters relating to subject, area and
experiences during the trip. Since the book is first person the experience could be seen as
biased, but a lot of the information is factual based and simply observation. Most of the
book includes the natural and environmental information of the area, but some is on
travel which is useful for the project. The book allows for a different point of view from

the other sources. Much of the book is academically supported, given that the author is a
naturalist himself.
Crompton, John L. "Motivations for Pleasure Vacation." Annals of Tourism Research 6.4
(1979): 408-24. WorldCat [OCLC]. Web. 3 Nov. 2015
John L. Crompton is a professor of Recreation, Park and Tourism Science at Texas A&M
University. Crompton received his Ph.D. from the Department of Recreation Resources
Development at Texas A&M also and has written many articles pertaining to recreation.
This is a secondary resource. This article is a psychoanalytic article relating to the
different motivations behind travel for leisure and pleasure. The article includes different
studies and its analysis on a variety of vacationers. The piece is also organized under
different motivations and refers back to the studies that were conducted.
This article will help a lot with understanding the psychological reasoning behind travel
as well as different types of people that are interested in travel.
REFLECTION: In comparison to other authors, this author included his own study of
travelers rather than referring to other researchers/authors. When I use this source in my
paper, I will most likely incorporate the motivations of travel the author included and the
study that supported his findings. This article is academically supported because the
author not only conducted a study but also included quotes and facts from different
sources. None of the sources included were worth following because most of them
contained the same information that this source utilizes. The audience that this article is
intended for are those that are researching leisure activities but, this article is also
connected to psychological research.

Epperson, Arlin. "Why People Travel." Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance 54.4
(1983): 53-55. Web.
Arlin Epperson is a business professor at Columbia College. He has written many articles
for the Journal of Physical Education, especially relating to leisure and travel in the
business world.
This is a secondary source. This article is designed into four sub-headers describing the
motivations and reasons behind travel. The author uses statistics and academic sources to
support the different motivations of vacation. Epperson studies how leisure travel across
the country has been increasing and why it is. The author also summarizes how people
are different and not everyone travels for the same reasons.
This article will greatly benefit my paper, allowing me to use statistics and actual studies
to back up the information I include in my future project.
REFLECTION: This article is well cited and includes a lot of factual information, there
are many references stated that are worth following. It is obvious that the author avoided
using personal opinion and mentioned other authors opinions from his citations. Most of
the information that will be included in an essay that may be prepared would be the
percentages of people that enjoy travel for a certain reason or percent of people that travel
in general. Although this article is written for business people interested in the travel
business, it is also helpful in a sociological sense to help people understand why people
travel in society as a whole. The topic of my paper is now easier to understand because I
have numbers associates with the ideas I had in mind, or other authors had in mind. This
paper will greatly help with overall support of information, rather than just helping
change my ideas/opinions of the paper.

Krakauer, Jon. Into the Wild. New York: Anchor, 1997. Print.
John Krauker is an American author that has mainly written about outdoor adventure. He
has written many magazine articles and nonfiction books as well relating to outdoors. The
magazines he has written to include Outdoor magazine, National Geographic and Rolling
Stone.
This is a book source, it is a nonfiction story using diaries and stories about a man (Chris
McCandless) who decided to leave home, change his name and travel/backpack across
the country to eventually pursue his dream of venturing into the wild. This true story
used many quotes from people that Chris met and impacted during his travels and also
inserts from his diary that he kept during the years he traveled. The author highlights the
many relationships Chris developed with different people around the country and the
many places he experienced before passing away in his Alaskan adventure.
This book allows me to see part of a first-hand experience of travel and allowed me to
analyze a little bit of why he traveled and what made him happy about his travel with his
diary.
REFLECTION: If I were to use this book as a reference in essay formation, I would
include it by quoting information about the travels in general or Chris reflections
throughout his journey. The author helped illustrate the story of Chriss life by gathering
information and researching resources such as friends and family members that would not
be successful without his diary and pictures found. There are not many resources worth
following other than the diary since most of the book was interview based. After reading
this book I learned more about why a person chooses to escape and why someone would
travel to the extreme, rather than just commercial travel.

Potts, Rolf. Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-term World Travel. New
York: Villard, 2003. Print.
Rolf Potts is an experienced traveler that has reported and written from many countries
around the world. He has written articles for National Geographic Traveler, Outside, New
York Times, The Atlantic and more. Potts is currently a nonfiction writing professor at
Yale University.
This book is a guide for people who are interested in traveling for many weeks at a time
to different countries or even across a country. The book includes many different chapters
ranging from finances of travel to how to meet people during travels. The author uses
almost step by step instructions for finding a destination, saving money and dealing with
the overall travel experience from personal experience and from other travelers
experiences.
Reading this book really helped me understand the process of more extreme travel or
longer travel and how most people should plan sufficiently before perusing trips that are
planned for many weeks of being away from home.
REFLECTION: Unlike other references that have explained the different reasons why
people travel and how travel is good, this resource allows me to show the audience of
my essay how travel is more of a payoff. Travel is something you really take the time to
plan for; the book shows the more realistic side of travel, but also explains that it is
possible for every person to travel how they wish. I will use this source to illustrate the
contradictory side to my argument of how travel is helpful to people by explaining the
cost and time it takes to plan a vacation. Most of the information in this book is the
authors opinion because he has much experience in his field, but he also includes

information from famous authors like Henry David Thoreau. This text helped me think
more into the technicalities of travel rather than just the leisur, it will help me develop
more of a structured paper.
Reints, Britt. "Why Travel Makes Us Happy - In Pursuit of Happiness." In Pursuit of Happiness.
N.p., n.d. Web. 20 Oct. 2015. <http://inpursuitofhappiness.net/blog/2012/08/24/whytravel-makes-us-happy/#.Viat3H6rTIU>.
Britt Reints is a happiness expert, TED speaker, blog writer and author. She created an
entire webpage with many different articles helping people to become happier. She is
hired to coach happiness and also speaks about how to be happy across the country.
This is a general internet source: this article lists the many reasons why travel can create
happiness. Each reason is thoroughly explained and is supported through first hand
experiences. Learning, connection, and accomplishment are all some reasons why people
travel and also how it makes people happy
This article relates to why people travel because it shows the reasons travel can make a
person happy. Happiness is a very significant reason to do something and is a goal that
many people have. This article also explains a lot of Chris McCandlesss motivation
behind traveling so much before going to his final destination in Alaska in the book Into
the Wild by John Krakauer. The article also relates to my personal experiences traveling
by correlating to some of the reasons why I travel.
REFLECTION: This article covers six different reasons why travel can make a person
happy; these reasons will help me by explaining why a person would travel or the
benefits of traveling. The author is using her own opinion to support her statements in
this article; she includes first hand experiences and pictures to support her opinion. Other

Furguson 7

than her own personal experiences, she seems to lack academic support to her statements.
The text also seems to be a little generalized; the author lacks detail and support on each
individual reason. Overall this text helped understand a different view point on why
people travel, yet supported my view point on travel being beneficial to people. The
audience of this text is intended to be the authors blog readers, she is informing the
readers on ways to be happy and this article is one of the many subjects she informs
readers to find happiness in.
Salloum, Habeeb. "Why Travel?" Contemporary Review 273.1591 (1998): 88. Literature
Resource Center. Web. 30 Oct. 2015.
Habeeb Salloum is a freelance writer focusing on topics of food and travel. He has
written about seven books, and many articles focusing on cuisine of the numerous
countries he has traveled to. In his articles he focuses of the history and culture of each
country and his experiences of travel.
This article is a secondary source. Why Travel? is about Habeeb Salloums travels to
different vacation spots and countries. During his travels he meets many different people
that explain to him why they are traveling. There are many different reasons to why
people travel, especially depending on the area they are traveling too. Salloum uses
personal experiences to compare to the people interviewed for his article.
The article shows me that there are many different reasons why one would travel, and not
everyone is the same or has the same idea of travel. I connect a lot with Salloums
reasons for travel and I can relate to his comparisons to the people he interacted with
throughout the article.

Furguson 8

REFLECTION: Habeeb Salloums reasons for travel are very similar to other articles, but
vary a little because the information was collected during his own travel. The author does
not supply any resources to follow; his information was gathered himself and supported
with interview questions. This article was specific because Salloum is asking many
different kinds of people in different places why they travel. Some of the authors
information is personal opinion based, but also uses the input of others opinions, so the
article is not biased. The article is fairly informal and intended for those interested in
travel mainly. I learned much from this article, a lot relating to how people and their
opinions differ greatly and not everyone travels for the same reasons.
Siddiq, Adam. "9 Wonderful Benefits Of Traveling." Lifehack RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Nov.
2015. http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/9-wonderful-benefits-traveling.html
Adam Siddiq is a writer for the website Life Hacks. He writes to help people improve
their lives; he is a Peak Performance Coach. Adam has wrote countless articles pertaining
to benefits in life and the joys of life to help improve peoples life.
This is a general internet source. The author uses 9 subheadings each relating to a benefit
of traveling. This article is mainly explaining the different reasons why a person should
travel and how it would benefit them.
I believe that this article will help by adding to my argument that people should travel
and also adds explanation to why people travel.
REFLECTION: This article is not very academically supportive. The author does not
supply any extra resources and a lot of the information is opinion based. Although the
article is opinion based, it adds to the argument that my paper includes. The article is
mainly biased.
