My Renaissance

Amber Clark,
The topic I am elaborating on is My Renaissance in chapter one,
Introduction to Critical Thinking in Business by Edward Engh. This has been a
personal journey to how I view perception on a daily basis and how it is
based on pre-determined absolute truths and why it changed. It has exposed
how common absolute truths can be subject to variables not always seen.
Even laws of nature must always be open to further scientific consideration.
Even common social probabilities are sometimes contradictory to scientific
statistics and laws of nature, due to inconsistent variables. This chapter has
fostered an epiphany for me, to analyze common social pre-conceptions
against empirical data and I would like to explain it to you my Renaissance
experience.
A scientific fact is a truth that has been proven by verifiable
observation, but what was not known is, the truth is never final. All scientific
facts should be open to debate because nothing is definite. I have always
understood the word scientific fact, but I never questioned it or studied the
meaning of it. As a society we should never take anybody elses word; we
should continue to challenge ourselves and have an open thought process.
This made me think of the people who thought the world was flat. Who was
the first person to think of this and why did everyone blindly follow that
thought? What else on a daily basis does everyone assume is a social
preconception without any thought behind it and its nonsense? Actually
reading this and analyzing this thought has opened my eyes to a new
process of thinking. Nothing should be assumed, everything is open for
questioning. Be open to different views, because what you may have blindly
been following may be fabrication. All great philosophers questioned the
norm.
Perceptions can be either true or false. True perceptions are a clear
way of thinking in reality. This helps the mind perceive different sights,
smells, tastes, sounds and touch. What was new to me was the fact that
perceptions have different categories and are subject to variables not always
seen. When a person misperceives a reality, but actually believes what they
are seeing is called a Type 2 error. A Type 1 error is when a person perceives
something as false when in fact it is true. Perception and reality play different
parts on what they mind tells an individual and can be confusing when you
want the absolute truth. When mulling this idea it brought me back to my
childhood, when most children believe they saw a monster. This is obviously
a false perception but to understand that a child saw a monster and believe

it was honest, makes a person think how the mind can play tricks on a
person. When reading about false perceptions, the first thing that came to
mind was a crazy person but when analyzing the concept it brought to light a
new perception.
Scientific data and perception are tools that humans use for the
decision making process. Tools are needed to overcome the limitations we
have as a society. Without any empirical evidence or perception society could
not make any sense of daily tasks and decisions, which would lead to
absolute nonsense. When a person observes events, their assumptions are
based on personal historical events, and commonly upheld knowledge. A
person who applies critical thinking can often make more accurate
predictions with the realization that no two events are ever identical.
Variables are a certainty, and a person who investigates the new variables
and how they affect the outcome, will be have greater resolution skills. This
can be applied to social interactions, traumatic incidents, and every facet of
life.
While I had a basic understanding what scientific data, perceptions, or
even laws of science are, the reason why this has been so personal me is
because in my case, reading this and actually analyzing everything has
started a thirst for knowledge. No one wants to be a follower but instead be a
leader. Without using these tools and how could anyone lead? This chapter
was the first chapter that I read relating to school in ten years. This Business
chapter has made me acknowledge the fact that I was not meant to simply
read the chapters and answer questions but in fact study the meanings and
reason why someone would even right about a certain subject. It has opened
me up to a whole new way to study and that is why this chapter is my
Renaissance. I cannot rely on someone telling me answers I need to
investigate and question things or this is a simple waste of time. I chose to
go back to school to get a different perception on things and discover new
ideas using empirical evidence. This chapter simply helped me on my
journey to discover it by giving me a different outlook how simple words can
be interpreted into a meaning that is new and exciting.
