AUTOMOTIVE ENGINES

COMPONENTS DESIGN
Unit - 1

Mention classification of
engineering materials.
The engineering materials are mainly
classified as
metals and their alloys, such as iron,
steel, copper, aluminium, etc.
non-metals such as glass, rubber,
plastics, etc.
The metals may be further classified as
Ferrous metals
Non-ferrous metals.

What is Ferrous metals?

The ferrous metals are those which have the iron
as their main constituents. Examples: cast iron,
wrought iron and steel.
What is non-ferrous metals?
The non-ferrous metals are those which have
metals other than iron as main constituents such
as copper, aluminium, brass, tin, zinc, etc.
The non-metals are ceramic materials and organic
materials. The ceramic materials are oxides,
carbides and nitrides of various metals. Examples:
glass, brick, concrete, cement, etc. The organic
materials are polymeric materials composed of
carbon compounds. Examples: Paper, rubber,
plastic, wood, paints, etc.

Mention selection criteria for materials.

The selection of material for designing
purposes depends upon the following factors.
availability
suitability
cost
physical properties
mechanical properties
Mention some physical properties of
metals.
The physical properties of metals are colour,
size, shape, density, electrical, thermal
conductivity and melting point.
