Reflective Essay
When I walked into this class of English 113A. I told myself, I am
going to walk out of here with a mindset of becoming the best of the best.
One of the best writers out of this class. Solely learning from professor Jackie
and Jessie. My grammar, writing, and my ideas will improve, my ideas will
keep expanding for the better. This is my goal for this semester, this is what I
will achieve from English class 113A. I actually thought there was no hope
for me when it came to writing essays. I had a slight advantage when I read
books for fun ever since my junior year. I love to read, I thought reading
wasnt going to help me at all in writing all these insane essays for English in
college.
In my senior year, my English teacher Mr.Stell taught the students how
to write better and correct my grammar which I had so much trouble in. I am
glad that I took his class because I was able to be more confident with my
writing for college. Unfortunately I wasnt accepted to CSUN the year after I
graduated due to the fact that I didnt send my SAT scores. I took the year of
and got myself into checking out so many books at the Van Nuys Public

library and started working to make a little extra money on the side. I have
no regrets whatsoever by taking the year of , because I was able to make
great friend here at CSUN.
Also having great teachers and tutors here on campus who give their
full support and better their students in writing. I wasnt sure that the English
courses in college require a workload of persuasive, reflective, and research
essays. What really caught me of guard was the MLA format. I wasnt taught
this back in high school but, thank the sweet beard of Moses, Jackie and
Jessie were there to set examples and reviews on our essays to format and
cite them. In my opinion, I still need to improve my writing mostly on my
grammar.
As far as I am concerned, my writing still looks as if a steamed lobster
got out of a pot and started to write everywhere on a sheet of paper. What I
am starting to do is to write, just to take out a notebook and write about
anything I want on it. I know if I start this habit, it will improve my English
writing dramatically in grammar and punctuation. The habit I already do is
reading out loud the written material to see if it sounds right for the reader
that I am presenting to. What motivates me more is that there are
scholarships that the university is ofering for writing essays such as a
persuasive essay and research essay.
In progression one essay, I had to write a narrative essay which was
not difficult for me. It wasnt as difficult as the others because I was able to

write about myself and express myself. I was delighted that professor Jackie
let us write a poem instead of an actual essay since I love to write poems,
and it didnt feel like a writing assignment at all. After I got my grade for my
narrative essay I learned that MLA format was important for all English
course assignments since in the future all the English assignments require
MLA format. The research paper that I have completed which was technically
the final essay I have done was not as great as the narrative essay.
In progression 3 I did horrible, my grade for that assignment was a
62%. I had so much going on that I forgot to fix my grammar and all the
mechanics required for the essay, and didnt follow much instructions that
was given from professor Jackie. Dumbfounded I turned in my assignment
without the corrections I was supposed to complete for the research paper. I
was so confident that I thought I was going to get at least a 78 percent on
the assignment. I was wrong, I got a 62 percent on the assignment. In fact, I
had so much errors that I needed to remove so many unnecessary sentences
and commas that brought down most of my grade downhill like a flaming tire
rolling into the abyss. What I did learn from this experience is that I should
really look into my schedule and be more organized with my assignments
instead of being confident as Hercules instead of checking any grammatical
errors on my research papers to get a better grade and improving my grade
in my class. What I discovered in this assignment is that I was a good
researcher. That I provided good points in a research paper and brought good

arguments in the assignment. All I need to do is to seek improvement to

better myself in writing.
I realized that this is my final essay, the final legit essay that professor
Jackie will be grading for the last time. I tried to register for her English 113B
class but she isnt teaching it next semester which is a bummer. I am glad
that I took her class because she made writing fun and less stressful than
any other English teacher I ever had, but I will keep in contact with her so
she is able to see what I need improvement on my grammar or figurative
language. I will miss all the support I had from Professor Jackie and Jessie,
they inspired me to write more, not only to seek improvement in writing, but
in anything that I do.
