CONWAY 2.5 PLANT SCIENCE

Question
How does temperature affect the growth of an

organism?

Abstract
In my experiment I used radish seeds to test if heat could

affect the amount of time it takes for a plant to germinate.

The purpose was to see if there was a faster alternative to
growing plants. My hypothesis was that the longer the
radish seeds stayed in the microwave the faster the seeds
would germinate because the molecules would be moving
around inside the seed which would make the process
faster. I separated seeds and put 10 seeds in each group
in put the groups in the microwave for various times. In
the end the control group germinated the fastest and the
2 minute group germinated the slowest. In conclusion the
control group grew the fastest because some of the cells
in the radish seed were destroyed by the microwave rays.

Hypothesis
If I put an equal amount of radish seeds in

each group and put them in the microwave for

various time periods, then the group that
stayed in the microwave for the longest
amount of time will germinate the fastest,
because molecules speed up when they are
heated.

Materials
1.Ruler to make exact cuts for the tinfoil.
2. Aluminum foil to use as the base
3. Scissors to cut the aluminum foil.
4. Paper towels to act as something to grow in.
5. Labels or masking tape to label each group
6. Permanent marker to also label
7. Microwave oven to heat the seeds in
8. Microwave safe coffee cup to put seeds in while they heat
9. Around 40 Radish seeds to test with
10. Another microwave safe container to put radish seeds in
11. Hot mitt to take container out of microwave
12. Spray bottle filled with water
13. Water to moist the paper towel
14. Box or drawer to keep seeds in.
15. Dropper to distribute water accordingly.

Procedures
1. Using the ruler, cut out four 20 cm x 16 cm rectangles of aluminum foil.
2. Cut four rectangles of paper towel, 18 cm x 15 cm.
3. Make the labels for your experiment on the paper towels: 0 seconds, 30 seconds, 1

minute, and 2 minutes.

4. Make creases in the paper towel pieces by folding them into thirds, each 6 cm long.
5. Set a paper towel in the middle of one piece of aluminum foil.
6. Using the spray bottle, spray the paper towel until all of it is moist, but not dripping wet.
7. Make a line of about 10 radish seeds down the center of the paper towel.
8. Fold the foil around the paper towel.
9. Write 0 seconds on a label and place it on the foil packet. This will act as a control
group.
10. Fill the coffee cup with water and place it in microwave. This cup will absorb any excess
energy caused by the microwaving of the seeds.
11. Put about 10 radish seeds into the dry microwave safe container.
12. Set the timer for 30 seconds, make sure you have both the radish cup and water cup
inside, set the power to high, and hit start.
13.After the seeds have been microwaved, remove them and place them on another paper
towel bed and foil. Label with the 15 seconds label.
14. Dump out the water in the cup and put in new cool water.

Variables
Control- Radish seeds that did not go in the

microwave.
Independent Variable- Amount of time in the
microwave
Dependent Variable- How fast the radish
seeds germinate.

Conclusion
In conclusion the control group grew the

fastest because some of the cells in the radish

seed were destroyed by the microwave rays.
