Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Last Straw
Objective:
A main expectation of the lesson is that my learner, will develop their skills in reading,
writing, listening and oral communication, as well as in reasoning and critical thinking. I
will teach my student about inference.
Students will also be expected to provide clear answers to questions and wellconstructed explanations. It is critical as well that students be able to relate events and
the feelings of characters to their own lives and experiences and describe their own
interpretation of a particular passage
TEKS:
5.10.D-draw inferences such as conclusions or generalizations and support them with
text evidence and experience.
5.13.G- draw conclusions from information gathered from multiple sources to draw
conclusions.
Materials:
Book: Diary of a Wimpy Kid- The Last Straw
Writing Utensil & Paper (Writing Sample
Inference worksheets
Technology game that quiz you about Inference (If there is enough time)
Activities/Teaching procedures
1. Teach inference- What is Inference? Using what you already know & evidence from
the text to read between the lines and figure out what the author is saying.
2. Summarize the details of a setting to help explain inference
3. Read Diary of A Wimpy kid and use academic language from past lessons to help the
student understand what is is to infer.
Questions for the learnerto complete a writing sample(If there is enough time)
4. Prediction before reading: What do you believe will happen in the book based on what
you inferred about the themes and pictures in the book?
5. After reading page 1-3: In the opening pages Greg complains about the lousy gifts he
gets now that he's in middle school because adults have decided that he's too old for
toys or anything thats actually fun. How does your experience in this regard compare to
Greg's?
5. Read chapter one
6. Was your prediction correct? Yes or No? Explain
7.Review inference: What can you infer after reading chapter one?
Challenge:
Omar loves challenges and he has this book at home but has never read it. I thought it
would be to challenge Omar to read from page 11 to 22 by the next week! I will update
his result.
Monitoring Student Progress :
I will begin to monitor student progress at the beginning of the lesson. I will see how well
the student is listening. I will do this by reading the learner the target goal and asking he
or she what we will be going over today. Then I will teach him about inference and

access him through his reading by asking him questions that he can infer from what he
has read. In the end I will go over questions and make sure he is fluent in this week's
academic language.
