interview of Susan Cain, who
quit Wall Street to write a book
about the misunderstanding of
introverts in modern society and
culture. The book is named
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in
a World That Cant Stop Talking.
This book has been, and still
remains, on the US bestseller
list. In the interview she
elaborated on the word introvert.
She explained that introverts
feel most alive and get their
energy from low stimulation
environments. People often
connect this with being antisocial, although this is just a
characteristic for an introvert.
The education system favors the
extrovert so by that, it forces
introverts to act like an
extrovert. Introverts can be shy,
but many are not, they just
prefer quieter settings. Our
society and education is
ultimately geared around
extroverts.
Introverts thrive on reflection
and solitude. In contrast, an
extroverts social life and out
going personality boost their
mood and energy. Therefor, they
get bored from an excessive
amount of solitude. Although,
theres not an exact division
between the two. Extroverts are
perceptually known to be noisier
and to want the spot light and
introverts are confused with
being shy. Rather than feeling
discomfort, introverts become

She elaborated on what it is

place. Her opinions and ideas
are credible, due to the fact
that her book is a best seller. In

Introverts feel like outsiders.

Everyone shares some
extravert and introvert traits,
there are few individuals with a
personality to be extremely
one or the other.
Both being shy and introverted
puts a limitation on social
interaction, but for opposing
reasons. Introverts do best in
quiet situations because thats
what they desire. Introverts
think before they speak.

Although, our culture tends to
value extraverted qualities.
Extravert- assertive/ outspoken
Introvert- solitude/ quiet
contemplation
Theres a lack of a simple
distinction between the two and
its far more complex than being
shy versus outgoing. Jungian
psychology offers the difference
between the two. Extroverts are
naturally drawn to the outside
world, and introverts are more
focused on their own, inner
world. Introverts do in fact enjoy
social interaction, but in a
different way that extroverts.

There are a lot of negative

labels placed on introverts. Our
culture imposes introverts to
act like an extravert.
Characteristics of an introvert
are misunderstood and are
looked at negatively.
Extraverts are given the upper
hand. Introverts require more
alone time to balance out the
energy they expend in social
situations. Regarding
relationships, introverts prefer
quality over quantity. Introverts
have become accustomed to
behaving like an extrovert in
social situations. They act
more outspoken than they feel
on the inside.

tiring. Extroverts fade when
theyre alone. Leave an
extrovert alone for two minutes
and he will reach for his cell
phone. When introverts get
their alone time to recharge its
not antisocial or a sign of being
depressed. Being alone with
their thoughts is as restorative
as sleeping. Introverts are
commonly described as
guarded, reserved and
private, just to name a few.
These narrow, judgmental words
suggest a smallness of
personality. Introverts can also
be seen as arrogant. This is a
common misconception because
of being more reflective,
independent and level headed in
comparison to extroverts.
Our society prefers extroverts
and this makes for a pressure to
be outgoing. With extroversion
comes being more personable,
which leads to having more fun
and allows you to have success.
This isnt the case with only a
social life, but with school and
work. At school, students are
mainly graded on their vocality,
rather than their ideas. In other
words, school promotes loudness
instead of thoughtfulness. Even
teachers, who are expected to
encourage uniqueness and
personal growth would pertain to
each individuals natural
tendencies. Class participations
grades should not be as
prominent in school. Introverts
have to constantly remind
themselves to be actively
outspoken in the classroom.
Group projects and class

Extroverts dominate public and

social life. If introverts ran the
world, it would be a calmer and
more peaceful soft of place
without a doubt. Extroverts
endlessly strive to have
attention and to have a voice.
Being outgoing is considered
normal in our society. Being a
people person is a
compliment.

This articles main focus was

on the school aspect in which
introverts struggle and how
this extends into the real
world. All in all introverts dont
feel excepted in school.
Classrooms should allow
everyone to flourish, in their
own ways. There are jobs that
dont require an outgoing
personality. Introverts let
people run with their ideas,
and theyre likely the brains of
the project. However, when
theyre in a comfortable
environment they can flourish
and seem like an extrovert. For
example, Ghandi or Donald
Trump. Introverts arent given
the same opportunity as
extroverts, therefor theres an
inbalance which leads to a loss
of success. Introverts need to
be understood and ironically,

presentations dont pertain to an

introverts personality. Susan
Cain disagrees of the idea that
students need to heavily
participate in class to be
prepared for the real world.
Introverts listen well to others

because of societys lack of

introverts are a key factor to a
businesss success. The
thoughts and ideas from
introverts need to be
recognized. This can be done,
as long as theyre granted the
right environment. But first,
this starts with the fixation of
perception among society. The
more freedom introverts have
to contemplate solutions and
ideas, the more opportunities
will be available for extroverts
to implement them.

Theres an assumption that

extraversion is better. This can
act as an obstacle to the

must show recognition of this

insight would consist of
complaints about how society
affects the way they behave and
socialize. Introverts are forced to
act like an introvert. The physical
and mental demand to the outer
world is draining to an introvert.
In contrary, extroverts find it
exhausting to be to themselves
in their inner world. Introverts
can deal with their own world
around them but work best in
their own reflection. Extroverts
work best in action. Introverts
learn and process through
observation and evaluation and
extroverts act through trial and

typical personality and they are
given negative assumptions.
Introverts need to believe and
be confident in their behavior
and tendencies. They need to
have a healthy skepticism and
exercise their natural personality
to have a beneficial life.
According to Jung, extraversion
and introversion refer to the
direction of psychic energy. If a
person's energy usually flows
outwards, he or she is an
extravert, while if this energy
normally flows inwards, this
person is an introvert. Jung
published 'Psychological Types'
in which the concepts of
introverted and extroverted
personality types are introduced
- habitual outlooks which
determine a person's experience
of life.

crowded, superficial, boring,
over-stimulating, and focused on
action, not reflection. The
school environment does not
dedicate quiet time to work
alone, nor is there a given time
for private reflection. Modern
schools seem to be designed for
extroverts (Burruss, J).

School is unwelcoming for an

introvert, from the start of the
day to the end. A typical
school day is full of large
groups, large areas, large
classes, lunch in a common
area, locker rooms,
assemblies, etc. All of these
environments are ideal for the
student who likes to constantly
be with others and who can
socialize willingly, easily, and
loudly to anyone who will
listen, and furthermore, a
student who tolerates crowds
and noise, and prefers to focus
on activity and action.
