LifeinGermany
AnneFrankwasbornonJune12th,1929intheGermantownof
FrankfurtamMain.Herfathersfamilyhadlivedthereforgenerations.
Annessister,Margot,isthreeandahalfyearsolder.Theeconomic
crisis,Hitlersrisetopower,andgrowing
antisemitism
putanendtothefamilyscarefreelife.
OttoFrankandhiswifeEdithdecide,justasmanyotherGermanJews,toleaveGermany.

ANewLifeintheNetherlands
OttocansetupabusinessinAmsterdamandthefamilyfindsahomeontheMerwedeplein.
Thechildrengotoschool,Ottoworkshardinhisbusiness,andEdithlooksafterthehome.As
thethreatofwarinEuropeincreases,Ottoandhisfamilytryto
emigrate
toEnglandandtheU.S.A.,buttheseattemptsfail.OnSeptember1st,
1939GermanyinvadesPolandandWorldWarTwostarts.

WarintheNetherlands
ForawhilethereishopethatTheNetherlandswillnotbecomeinvolvedin
thewar,butonMay10th,1940Germantroopsinvadethecountry.Five
dayslaterTheNetherlandssurrenderandis
occupied
.AntiJewish
regulationssoonfollow.Jewsareallowedtogotolessandlessplaces,
AnneandMargotmustattendaJewishschool,andOttoloseshisbusiness.

WhenarenewedattempttoemigratetotheU.S.A.fails,OttoandEdithdecidetogointohiding.
Ottofurnishesthehousebehindhisbusiness
premises
onthePrinsengrachtandthisbecomes
thehidingplace.HedoesthistogetherwithhisJewishbusinesspartnerHermannvanPelsand
helpfromemployeesJohannesKleimanandVictorKugler.
InHiding
OnJuly5th,1942MargotFrankreceivesacalluptoreportfora
Germanworkcamp.ThenextdaytheFrankfamilygoesinto
hiding.TheVanPelsfamilyfollowaweeklaterandinNovember
1942aneighthpersonarrives:dentistFritzPfeffer.Theyremain
inthesecretannexforjustovertwoyears.
Thepeopleinhidingmuststayveryquiettheyareoftenafraidanddespitegoodandbadtimes,
spendmostofittogether.TheyarehelpedbytheofficeworkersJohannesKleiman,Victor
Kugler,MiepGies,andothers.Thesehelpersnotonlyarrangefood,clothesandbooksthey
arecontactwiththeoutsideworldforthepeopleinhiding.
ADiaryasaBestFriend
Shortlybeforegoingintohiding,Annereceivesadiaryforher
birthday.Shestartswritingstraightawayandduringhertimein
hidingshewritesabouteventsinthesecretannexandabout
herself.Herdiaryisagreatsupporttoher.Annealsowritesshort
storiesandcollectsherfavoritesentencesbyotherwritersinanotebook.
WhentheMinisterofEducationmakesarequestontheradioforpeopletokeepwardiaries,
Annedecidestoeditherdiaryandcreateanovelcalled'TheSecretAnnex'.Shestartsto
rewriteherdiary,butbeforeshehasfinished,sheandtheotherpeopleinhidingarearrested.
ArrestandDeportation
OnAugust4th,1944thepeopleinhidingalongwithhelpersJohannesKleimanandVictor
Kuglerarearrested.ViatheSichterheidsdienstheadquarters,prisonandtransitcamp
Westerbork,theyare
deported
to
Auschwitz

camp.JohannesKleimanisreleasedshortlyafterhisarrestandsixmonthslaterVictorKugler
escapes.ImmediatelyafterthearrestMiepGiesandBepVoskuijlrescueAnne'sdiaryand
papersthathavebeenleftbehindinthesecretannex.Despite
intensive
investigationsithas
neverbeenclearhowthehidingplacewasdiscovered.
OttoFrankReturns
OttoFrankistheonlyoneoftheeightpeopleinhidingtosurvive
thewar.DuringhislongjourneybacktoTheNetherlandshelearns
thathiswife,Edith,hasdied.Heknowsnothingabouthis
daughtersandstillhopestoseethemagain.Hearrivesbackin
AmsterdamatthebeginningofJuly.HegoesstraighttoMiepand
JanGiesandremainswiththemforanothersevenyears.
OttoFranktriestofindhisdaughtersbutinJulyreceivesnewsthat
theyhavebothdiedofdiseaseanddeprivationinBergenBelsen,a
concentrationcamp.MiepGiesthengiveshimAnne'sdiaryandpapers.Ottoreadsthediary
anddiscoversacompletelydifferentAnne.Heisverymovedbyherwriting.
AnnesDiary
Annewroteinherdiarythatshewantedtobeawriterorajournalistandthatshewantedher
diarypublishedasanovel.OttoFrank'sfriendsconvincehimofthegreatexpressivenessofher
diaryandonJune25th,1947,'TheSecretAnnex'ispublished.Manymoreeditions,
translations,aplay,andafilmfollow.
PeoplefromallovertheworldhavelearnedofAnneFrank'sstory.OvertheyearsOttoFrank
answeredthousandsoflettersfrompeoplewhohavereadhisdaughter'sdiary.In1960the
AnneFrankHousebecameamuseum.OttoFrankremainedinvolvedwiththeAnneFrank
Houseandcampaignedforhumanrightsandrespectuntilhisdeathin1980.
